Leah's story fascinates me. Hearing it in her own words is compelling, powerful, and entertaining - she's been through a lot. I recommend watching her A&E TV series to supplement!
Super interesting, disturbing, all the things. It's quite amazing how a religion can have so much force on a people--and yet, smart people are duped by it all the time, giving their heart and money and venerability over for people to squash for any reason they feel is deemed necessary. While the cover is a total eye sore, I applaud Leah for being brave enough to tell her take on a religion that totally brainwashed her until she had had enough.
I really enjoyed the beginning. It was intriguing to hear how Ms. Remini's family got involved in Scientology. My interests diminished as the topic became Scientology politics. Still a good, light read.
Let me start by saying this is more than just an expose on Scientology. This is really more of a memoir from Leah Remini. She talks about her childhood and when she first become a part of the church as a young girl after her mom joined. She talks about when she was in LA (after her family got being kicked out of Clearwater’s Scientology organization for Leah misbehaving) and aspiring to be an actress while also working an office job to try to help her family get by.
Yes, the majority of the book IS about Scientology but it is still tied into what is going on at that point in her life. I listened to the audiobook and having Leah tell me her story (in her wonderful Brooklyn accent) made it that much more enjoyable. Leah came off as real and genuine and you could almost feel her emotions coming through when she was talking about when she stared to doubts Scientology and her own beliefs.
I would highly recommend this to anyone curious about behind the scenes of Scientology (and yes...it does discuss a certain couch-jumping actor and his crazy romance (?) with a certain Dawson’s Creek actress) or if they want a good memoir to read.

Listening to Leah’s distinctive voice on audiobook was half the fun of this. The rest was general curiosity. Worth satisfying, in my opinion. (Yet, wouldn’t be one of those “you MUST read this!” books.)

Have been watching Leah most of my life but never knew about her Scientology connection until her reality show. This set me on the path to reading more (Going Clear, Ruthless, etc) and watching the documentaries to get more information. Fascinating stuff that can't be all bad or they wouldn't have the followers they do.
Suggested this book to a friend and she loved it - we talk all the time about how influential a book it has been for us and how you really never know what is going on in a person's life until they share all of it with you.

Truly heartbreaking to think you’re in a religion that isnt what you want it to be after dedicating 30 years of your life to it.
Totally a cult though knew that before reading this book and know it more so now.

Somewhat interesting, sometimes not so much. Maybe I just lost interest after putting it down for a while.
