this was a great quick read. the pacing is perfect, i finished it in a few hours, and it is a perfect balance of funny and real at the same time. during the middle of the book, the main character is angry, and it made me angry as well! i was getting worked up alongside her! recommend for anyone in a reading slump or if you just want something quick that is still high quality.

Was frustrated with every character until the very end lol, an entertaining read in a everyone sucks kind of way. Wish there was more even tempered folks, every single character felt or turned into a villain. Really fast paced and engaging read, good to get you out of a reading slump. It’s entertaining like how a telenovela is entertaining.

„ Ayoola summons me with these words - Korede, I killed him. I had hoped I would never hear those words again.“

This is how this book starts & what you read is what you get - for some parts of the book. But while my sister, the serial killer sounds like a thriller when you first read the title ( & it definitely has thriller qualities to it ) it is so much more than that, packed into only 223 pages.

The book is narrated Korede, a caring nurse in a Nigerian hospital, who is continually called on to help her younger sister Ayoola, who claims to have killed her last three boyfriends in "self-defence". When Ayoola starts dating the doctor Korede has long been secretly in love with, Korede becomes torn between protecting her crush or staying loyal to her sister.

It is a book, that focuses on family dynamics.
It focuses on the dynamics between the sisters Korede & Ayoola. It focuses on Korede‘s jealousy of her sister, the younger one, prettier one, the one that always gets her way. Korede is the typical big sister, always blamed for the younger sisters wrong-doings or mistakes.

Where Ayoola is childish, selfish, rude, careless, beautiful, charming & always gets her way, lies even to her sister & doesn’t have any regrets ( not even after literally murdering someone ), Korede is the protector, the one worried, spending time to think of something clever to keep her younger sister protected.

Korede is aware that her sister is a monster, but the responsibility for her younger sibling weights heavier than the realisation or guilt she should feel, for helping her sister out over & over again whenever another body turns up.

The book has a great way of telling the story of these two sister with loads of dark humour & at only 223 pages & chapters that are only 2 - 3 pages for the most part, it is a rather easy & quick read & perfectly shows of the way, families discard ugly truths to save their members.

3.5

This book explores the toxic relationship between a meticulous woman and her dangerously beautiful sister. Family loyalties are tested to the extreme, and the portrayal of the sisters’ upbringing in the flashbacks really set the groundwork for this complicated relationship they have after enduring shared trauma.

The writing style was rich with emotions and reactions. It was a short read I know but I would’ve loved less loose ends at the finish. The portrayal of sisterly jealousy is so well written and rounded out with the flashbacks which vibrantly paint the older vs/and younger sister dynamic using settings in their childhood which required them to be in survival mode.

Overall 3.5 because the ending was disappointing
