The book was fine. I didn't find myself excited to read it, but wanted to hear the ending. The story does remind you to appreciate the little moments in life and those around you.

While there were some plot points that worked themselves out a little bit too easily, I loved the overall message of this book and the feeling I got when I finished it. It made me take a moment to reflect on my parents and my family and appreciate each moment we get in life.

Sad but inspirational book about life, dying and grief!!!

“One upside to having a single parent was not rushing to get married, like so many people she knew had, just because they were trying to be adults. It was embarrassing, if you slowed down long enough to think about it, how many major life decisions happened because they looked like the model you’d been given.”

“All her life, Alice had wondered if she was doing things wrong, If she was in some way defective, or backward, but maybe it was just that she was exactly like her father, and better off alone. Maybe, she thought, cheering too the notion, her mistake had been assuming that somewhere along the line, everything would fall into place and her life would look just like everyone else’s.”

“But I will tell you, in terms of a life plan, you don’t need one. That’s my advice. It’s real life. It’s your real life. Plans don’t work. Just go with it.”

“If there was one thing that Alice felt like she’d done wrong, it was being too passive. She hadn’t quit working at Belvedere like everyone else had, she hasn’t broken up with people when she knew they weren’t right for her, she hadn’t ever moved anywhere or done anything surprising. She was just floating.”

“…you never know what’s coming, so you gotta be happy when it’s there. Whatever it is.”

What this synopsis does not tell you is that this book deals directly with death/dying/hospitals and the unique nature of single parent/child realshionships. While these subjects can be tender for folks, this books was so well written and the story so engaging, the emotions sneak up on you and then you will end up bawling at the end 😿 the Author's note is 👩‍🍳 💋

This book is probably one of the best books I have read in 2025, hand down ❤️‍🩹

This book has one closed door sex scene so this book is very mild in terms of spice. No notes 💯

This book has two things I absolutely love - a New York City setting and time travel.
It's a sweet little story about not knowing your purpose, fear of making the right choices, and appreciating life for what it is in the moment.

If you are looking for a book that ruminates on the meaning of life and what-ifs, this is the book for you. Especially poignant if you, like me, are in your 40s... a strange age where you suddenly start to realize you are neither young or old.
