League of Liars is the first book I have read by Astrid Scholte and I was completely hooked.

Cayder Broduck, dreams of being a prosecutor in the prison, Vardean. He is given the opportunity to apprentice under Graymond, a public defender and Cayder takes it as a stepping stone to becoming a prosecutor. Prisoners find themselves incarcerated in Vardean for carelessly using extradimensional magic for their own self-interest, risking the world and people around them. It is while apprenticed that Cayder comes face to face with three criminals that he is expected to defend and he learns that the punishment does not always fit the crime.

There were so many twists with this book and it kept me guessing throughout. I found Cayder to be a strong main character and it was evident that the was struggling to deal with the fact that his society was not what he thought it was. Another character that I really loved was Jey, he provided some much needed comic relief to this legal thriller turned prison heist. At times I found his jokes & sarcasm perfectly timed, but there were a few that were a little cringe-worthy too.

League of Liars has some really great worldbuilding. The Prison, Vardean, is positioned right at the very heart of the tear in the veil between their world and another dimension, where all of the magic comes from. It made for a unique magic system and also opened up so many questions about the other dimension and the beings from there. I hope this is something that may be explored further in the future.

League of Liars has so much potential to be developed further into the future. The ending was a bit of a cliffhanger, but I am uncertain as to whether subsequent books are planned. I am definitely hoping that there is more to come in this world.

Thank you to Allen & Unwin Australia for gifting me with a copy of League of Liars.

Didn't know it was for teens so I everything I would criticize can be explained away with it I guess. The style was a bit simple, the characters a bit shallow but I like the idea. I guess it's not a stand alone- if it is it would be infuriating.

Please tell me there is going to be another book? Because I need it!

First, that cover, I am in awe.

Second, Cayder and Jey are my newest favorite characters. I LOVED them so much.

Third, I need more people to read this amazing book.

Okay, let us get to an actual review. League of Liars is a fantastic book that blends fantasy and thriller perfectly. Right from the start, I was hooked and could not put this book down. I had to know all the details.

The magic in this book was neat you can pull magic from shadows. But there is a cost, it’s illegal to use. And it’s pretty easy to detect if you have used it as it leaves a mark on your skin. The bigger the crime, the bigger the mark.

There wasn’t a whole lot of romance, but I wish it wasn’t just in the end. I would have liked it a bit more in the book itself.

The only issue I had with League of Liars was the ending. It wasn’t clear that this was a series. I went into it thinking it was standalone. But there should be more right? Like that cannot be the actual ending.

So here is me hoping there is another book or two coming our way. Because I am not ready to let this one go.

Another great book from Astrid Scholte! Mysterious elemental magic threating the world? check! Conspiracies trying to be hushed up by the government? Check! a group of ragtag, unlikely heroes to save the day? Check! I really enjoyed this story and I cannot wait to see were there this series goes next.

Love this plot line - we have a prison heist in a fantasy where shadow magic exists after the Regency has imprisoned both our main character Cayder’s best friend and the a princess. Using shadow magic is illegal because it’s dangerous and Calder is determined to make sure his sister is found innocent.

The mystery was unfolding so nicely and I loved the cast of characters and how they come to help. The villains were showing up to be quite fun in almost a dystopian way.

However … there nothing out there to indicate this book is the start of a series ad the book ends in the middle of the climax, as if setting up for another book except even then, it felt a bit unfinished. We don’t have closure on any of our open plot lines and mysteries to be found out. I was left disappointed when I read the last page.
