Maybe my expectations were too high but...

This book is described as "Perfect for fans of Six of Crows and How to Get Away with Murder". Nope.

Also described as "a dark and twisty mystery set in a richly-drawn world where nothing is as it seems... rife with magic, villains and danger... mile a minute action... a thrilling page-turner". Also no.

I'm just so damn sad.

Seriously, I loved "Four Dead Queens" it was awesome. The concept was original and I really enjoyed it. Ever since then, Scholte has been on my auto-buy list. Then I hated "The Vanishing Deep" and thought wtf but allowed myself to get super excited about "League of Liars" because, well, because of previously mentioned descriptions! *sigh*

Astrid has awesome ideas. Really unique and special. Every new book synopsis promises this. Execution though.... severely lacking.

I hated that I just wanted this to be over.

thank you to penguin teen for my arc!
2/5 stars

I had high hopes for this book based off of what it’s compared to but in terms of Six of Crows, the portion is only there close to the end, almost 70% of the way through and HTGAWM is almost non-existent.

I do think that there is a lot of potential with this series and this book, the characters are compelling and I was invested in the world building and the mystery. Unfortunately, the pacing wasn’t it. It was definitely slow-paced to say the least, but we don’t necessarily pass the synopsis until about 68% of the way through and it also doesn’t pick up until that point either. For a book with so much world building, I still felt like I was missing a lot of information by the end.

I received an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. No Spoilers.

First off I really wanted to read this book. It is being marketed as Six of Crows x How to get away with murder. I personally would like to see more YA that deals with crime procedural instead of just main character either solving a cold case due to spunk or getting involved in an active case. Those aren't bad I just think this author was smart to try something different and make it a legal procedural type of case. Which leads me too...

PROS: The legal procedural parts of this book are the best parts. Interviewing and juggling each of characters and their individuals cases and circumstances for being in the magic abusers jail was interesting. Obviously we have to stretch our imagination slightly to believe that our main character Cayder has any business being as involved as he in the legal proceedings but its YA so I am cool with that.

MEH: the World building is average I think it assumes the readers are familiar with fantasy worlds and that the reader can fill in some of the blanks. This isn't an awful assumption, but since we need to understand the severity of edem crimes I wish more was explored and also why we should fear the regency more. Its all serviceable but holds the book back from being great imo.

BAD: My biggest issue is the number of POVs and how late one specific POV is introduced. Its hard to follow primarily Cayder with 2 other characters having POV snips that intertwine his (but mind you Cayder is the primary POV) and then 35% into the book we are introduced to a fourth POV. Additionally this fourth character interrupts the bit of development we have on the other three and is never fully realized either. Not to mention the forced romance between this character and Cayder by the end. The romance in this book is just not it for me and is the weakest component along with the POVs.

I really wanted to like this and it my first ARC as a reviewer I have been sent and this just didn't live up to the marketing.

i enjoyed this so much omg it was like six of crows and how to get away with murder had a love child. it just kept giving and it was so fun. ok so jey is literally jesper and i imagined cayder as brenton thwaites/dick grayson cause idk it just fit. i also imagined leta as thea from arrow.

I love when a book surprises me!

League of Liars was not what I was expecting, and I mean that in the best way. This book was fast-paced, with multiple POV's and jammed packed with secrets, conspiracy, and action. League of Liars has a very unique storyline, one in which I can't remember reading anything like it. I loved the world building and the complex characters. It is an urban fantasy and has little in the way of romance. The 'magic' in this book is very different in that it is not an individual thing but more a source that anyone can use but seems to be an entity in and of itself in a way as well. It is also outlawed. If you are looking for a unique combination of crime, mystery, and fantasy, this is a fantastic read.

*this arc was sent to me by the publisher to get an honest review in return*

This was a good book which is about four teens who are charged with murder and illegal use of magic who band together to break free. I really enjoyed this fantasy jail escape book. It's kind of like Money Heist but it's own way. The storyline was very well done and the pacing was great. I was hooked into the story from the first chapter but let's say that it didn't make all of it's promise through the end. Some parts of the writing just wasn't for me. I enjoyed the multiple povs but I have to say that the dialogue wasn't intriguing. I felt that the worldbuilding could have been better but if we are getting a second book then it is fine because we will see development.

This book is written from Cayder, Jey, Elenora and Leta's pov. I won't describe each and every character as my review would be very long. Sadly I didn't feel connected to these characters or felt somehow attached to them but they did have character developments in the book. Were they the best, eh but it was still there and noticeable. There weren't as many side characters as I was hoping for in this mystery fantasy book but there were some great ones. There was romance in this book but it was more towards the ending with an enemies to lovers trope with .5/5 level of steaminess.

With the ending, I'm honestly confused. I don't know if there will be a second book because there are so many questions left unanswered and open ended which I wasn't happy about as it's a mystery/thriller. So I rated this book three stars as I'm confused on how I feel about it. I liked it but also I felt a little meh about it. Like there were twists and turns but some parts of the writing wasn't it for me. I think most readers will enjoy this book if they love Six of Crows and Money Heist but if you hate having questions unanswered then I would recommend waiting until you hear a sequel.
