This book was memorable for all the right reasons. Jacinda tells her story of how she rose to power as Prime Minister of New Zealand, articulating every up and down along the way in fascinating detail. She is honest, humble, and above all else—inspiring. I was consistently moved by her drive and commitment to her work, open heart, and bravery she displayed in trailblazing her own way without trampling the paths of others. I think many people, especially young women, can see themselves in at least some part of Jacinda. And I hope they do, and learn that they too can find their own voice and contribute to this world through a different kind of power.

Usually, I don’t rate the memoirs/non-fiction I read, but this one felt like it deserved a review.

A Different Kind of Power reflects on Jacinda Ardern’s time in politics and as Prime Minister of New Zealand. As I scrolled through reviews, trying to complete my own, I saw the different interpretations of a left leaning politician’s auto biography, which solidified the complex interpretations of others actions.

In the pages of this book, I saw how dedicated and compassionate Jacinda is to her country and cause. She explores the struggle of being both a mother and Prime Minister, which I think deserves applause from everyone around the world, no matter your political leaning. I found her story incredibly moving, resinating with me and my beliefs. I think she’s showed that women can balance an ambitious career and motherhood gracefully, while also not shying away from the fact that it is, without a doubt, difficult. Jacinda expressed the struggles she faced during her time as Prime Minister, and the tragic and extraordinarily difficult events she led New Zealand through.

As someone who has connections to New Zealand, I have seen how Jacinda’s powerful leadership has positively affected the country’s people.

And lastly, compiling my review made me realize how, in the wake of tragedy and hatred, great leaders continue with kindness and grace.
