4 stars because I am not usually surprised by twists in crime thrillers (I read a LOT of them) but I did not see the
protagonist's death
coming

I gave it a 2 stars because even though I thought the plot was great and interesting, the writing was too boring. It was a lot of Tell and not enough Show. Far too much chat about the protagonist’s workplace logistics.

Sydney Ryan, a documentary filmmaker, investigates the case of Grace Sebold, a woman who has been imprisoned in St. Lucia for allegedly murdering her boyfriend during a spring break trip ten years ago. As Sydney uncovers overlooked evidence and questionable police work, her documentary, The Girl of Sugar Beach, becomes a ratings hit and puts Grace’s conviction in doubt. Public outcry leads to a reopening of the case, but as Sydney digs deeper, she starts to wonder whether she’s helping an innocent woman, or is she being manipulated by a master deceiver.

I really loved the weaving of the story of what really happened that night with Grace and her boyfriend and the behind the scenes of the making of the documentary made for a very engaging story. I thought I knew where the story was going, and then Grace met with Marshall at Ellie’s apartment and I was not prepared for what happened there. Did not see that coming at all, even with the warning that’s given. Marshall was definitely minimized by the other characters, so his story and actions caught me off guard. I wondered what was in Ellie’s past that allowed her to be manipulated at the end. Was it her love for Grace, or something else?

This was such a great read by one of my favorite authors.

Obviously, I'm an outlier. I loved Donlea's "Twenty Years Later," and I had high hopes for this book. Unfortunately it didn't deliver.😕 The pacing in this book was incredibly slow. It was so obvious to me what was going on, so the "big twist" didn't hit. Overall, the book is ok. I enjoy this author's writing style, and the story was good. It is intricately plotted. It just wasn't what I needed out of a thriller in order for it to be a book I'd recommend.[fast-paced, gripping, jaw-dropping, etc] I'd still be willing to try more books from him and I'm currently reading his book "Summit Lake."

Grace has been locked in a St. Lucia prison for 10 years for the murder of her boyfriend that she claims she did not commit. Sydney is a documentation whose work has released three wrongly convicted persons. Now Sydney will be broadcasting Grace's story to millions on a major TV network when she agrees to research her case.

Although I can't personally recommend this book, it seems many readers can due to its high rating here on goodreads. So I suppose you can take my review with a grain of salt.🤷‍♀️ I absolutely recommend "Twenty Years Later." I'll need to read a couple more of this author's books to determine if we're breaking up.😄

The Girl of Sugar Beach is must-see TV show about a fascinating question- Did Grace Sebold murder her boyfriend, Julian, while on a Spring Break vacation, or is she a victim of circumstance and poor police work? Grace has spent the last ten years in a St. Lucian prison, and reaches out to filmmaker Sidney Ryan in a last, desperate attempt to prove her innocence.

First of all, I loved the storytelling format. I didn’t expect the flips between the actual interviews and the reenacted TV episodes, but they made the experience better, and I was hooked! The audiobook production was good, and it made me feel like I actually watched the show.

This time, I couldn’t guess the whodunnit. The plot was solid, and the suspects were great! Charlie Donlea did an amazing job taking me on a tour. As each character was introduced, I was convinced that they’d be the main villain, only to change 5 minutes later when another character came in.

The crescendo into the climax was done really well. I truly felt the height of the suspense towards the end, and by the last page, I had to pick up my jaw from the floor!
