This book was longer than I expected it to be, and there were at least half a dozen times I thought it was the end, but it wasn't. Meg finds out what really happened to her sister, and it will shock you! And the ending was better than I could have hoped for.

This just dragged. It lost the exciting build-up one would expect from a plot like this.

It's a good in-between book and it was free to listen to. I like her reading and her storytelling. This one just wasn't my fav story by her.

A murder mystery with lots of suspects dotted throughout the small coastal town setting of the story. Everyone's lives tangled with everyone else's and the town's dirty little secrets all pivoting around one untold secret. Romance and steam in just the right amounts, not over shadowing the story. Heroin had her flaws but is smarter and more real than some, but nothing new with the formula: guy or girl loves, the other resistant but not until a betrayal and then near loss do they come back together. Still a good read. Will be reading more by this author.

I can’t even with how good it was!
This book was so damn good. It took me longer than I thought to figure out who did it. And that’s a worthwhile read.

Wow, did this book sneak up on me! I’m a huge Loreth fan and have read most of her novels. This has a similar set up as her other ones, which is fine by me. I was immediately intrigued by the main mystery, and as a journalism student, the true crime writer main character was right up my alley. Granted, the book started off a bit slow, and I didn’t feel that immediate chemistry between Meg and her old high school boyfriend Blake. I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to root for them as a couple.
But boy was I wrong!
About halfway through this book, things went from 0-60 and it was impossible to put down. I started to feel the tension of the mystery closing in AND the romantic element became more and more believable by the minute. I read the last half in an entire afternoon. The last 50ish pages are wildly suspenseful and well done. I found myself getting incredibly emotional when one of the main characters was presumed dead...then incredibly emotional again when they turned out to be alive!
A great mystery with real characters who experience emotional growth. Right up there with my other favorite Loreth book, “In the Barren Ground.”

I'm a huge fan of Loreth Anne White, and have read many of her books, but this one is my absolute favorite (so far!)

True crime writer Meg Brogan decides to return to her childhood home in Shelter Bay, Oregon after an 18-year absence. She's going to write the story of her sister Sherry's murder to bring her own closed-off emotions to rest. However, rather than write about a case that was supposedly solved, Meg finds that she's resurrecting more than her own emotions...possibly a case that was never truly solved.
This story effectively combined mystery, suspense, romance and atmosphere to create an extremely interesting tale. Meg is a complicated, layered woman who unknowingly disrupted many lives just by coming back to town. Her high school love, Blake Sutton, stirs up dormant feelings even she found surprising. Their quest for the truth surrounding her sister's death was both uncomplicated and puzzling at the same time, which made it different from most fare in this genre.
I also loved the strong sense of place in the story setting. I could feel the weather as it was just as important an element as the characters and events. The descriptions of the town, its sounds and smells, were vivid images as I felt transported to the place. This is as much a lovely story as it is mysterious. I very much appreciate its difference.
(I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review)
