This started off SO strong and I’m not entirely sure what happened somewhere near the middle. The author clearly has thought deeply about Nordic/Viking culture and history, which was a joy to read and learn about through a fantastical lens. However, as someone who’s not very familiar with the subject, I often felt like the author was hinting at things that would’ve deepened the world building if they didn’t completely go over my head.

I think overall the tone and plot of this book leans towards YA rather than adult, and that was especially clear through the juvenile and uninteresting dialogue and ultimately fairly low stakes. Slight spoiler, but after the final battle scene, the two adversaries essentially bickered childishly with one another (literally one person shot back with a “takes one to know one” to an insult), were chewed out by the father, and then essentially went on their merry way without dinner as punishment (/s) as if loads of people didn’t die in this dramatic battle. With this sort of ending, I couldn’t take anything else seriously. Which is a shame because Oddny’s journey in particular was engaging enough.

I’ll read this author’s other book, but I’m glad this is a standalone so I don’t have to hang out with the characters anymore.
