This author knows how to tell a story. It’s not the most refined writing, and I almost DNF’d at the very beginning because it felt very juvenile, but I’m glad I stuck with it. I found myself halfway through and completely addicted to listening to this soap-opera like story. Man, they say authors get joy out of torturing their characters, so Chevy Stevens must’ve been absolutely gleeful while writing this book. It was definitely pushing the boundaries on how much the main characters could reasonably take, but luckily it didn’t go over for me.
This is a highly entertaining mystery with a slightly disappointing twist. (That reveal just didn’t really make sense to me & wasn’t threaded in there right IMO) I’m glad I read it because it was completely addicting!

A Let-down!
Soap Opera-ish, bland characters, heavy on exposition, lacking in dialogue coupled with a slow-moving, predictable plot did not make this a great story. Much of the novel was page after page, chapter after chapter, of the main character telling us what had happened to her, what was happening, etc – with little dialogue. Even the flashbacks were told in this weird style, making it a bore to read, as well as hard to relate to the characters since you weren’t experiencing what they were as it happened. The plot focused too much on Toni’s time in prison (making it more drama than suspense), and not enough on the mystery. I slogged my way through this one expecting it to have a killer twist at the end. It didn’t! The murderer was obvious, as was the motive. I’d even go as far to say that the back of the book included the entire plot – there really wasn’t much more to this one than that.
Skip this one. ‘Never Let You Go’ by Chevy Stevens is miles better. I gave that one 5-stars. ‘That Night’ didn’t even seem like it was written by the same author.
