I had a hard time getting into the story, but it picks up about halfway through.
I read this in one day, and liked it a lot. I love books that move back and forth in time, and I loved how Chevy Stevens spun the story out, jumping back and forth from different times in the past to the present day. The main character was so different from the type of character I normally relate to. There were parts of the story that seemed unrealistic, hence the four stars, but the reason we read is to suspend disbelief, so I am willing to do so! A strong story from one of my favorite authors. I love reading her updates on Facebook, especially since she has a young child close to my son's age, and her critique partner is another one of my favorite authors (Carla Buckley).

I’m a big sucker for a teenage love story. This one had it all - high-school sweethearts, bullies, conflicts with parents, quarrels between siblings, drugs and booze, a tragedy, and a classic bitter-sweet happy ending. It kept me up late in the night and was hard to put away.
After a slow start, Chevy Stevens delivers a decent thriller worthy of a 3.5 rating. Still Missing is still her best book, but after two very average efforts, That Night does deliver an entertaining read.
As I read about Toni, a woman just released from prison after serving 16 yrs accused of murdering her sister I kept thinking this would be better classified as a YA novel. The chapters bounce back and forth between the present life of Toni the ex con dealing with trying to find the real killer and the days and weeks leading up to her sisters death when she was still in high school. It is a story of bullies. The cliques in highschool vary little from the cliques in prison or the half way houses for parolees.
There were times when I got frustrated at the pace of the novel. It felt drawn out, all those terrible mean girls and their vicious verbal and physical assaults. The pace does improve in the last 25% of the book and Stevens once again delivers a gripping ending.
This is one adult fiction I would highly recommend to teens and preteens. The bullies of this world lurk in every hallway. How you deal with the stress and hurtful feelings if you are not part of the in crowd is examined. The consequences of the actions taken by both the bullies and those bullied can be deadly.
