After a slow start, Chevy Stevens delivers a decent thriller worthy of a 3.5 rating. Still Missing is still her best book, but after two very average efforts, That Night does deliver an entertaining read.
As I read about Toni, a woman just released from prison after serving 16 yrs accused of murdering her sister I kept thinking this would be better classified as a YA novel. The chapters bounce back and forth between the present life of Toni the ex con dealing with trying to find the real killer and the days and weeks leading up to her sisters death when she was still in high school. It is a story of bullies. The cliques in highschool vary little from the cliques in prison or the half way houses for parolees.
There were times when I got frustrated at the pace of the novel. It felt drawn out, all those terrible mean girls and their vicious verbal and physical assaults. The pace does improve in the last 25% of the book and Stevens once again delivers a gripping ending.
This is one adult fiction I would highly recommend to teens and preteens. The bullies of this world lurk in every hallway. How you deal with the stress and hurtful feelings if you are not part of the in crowd is examined. The consequences of the actions taken by both the bullies and those bullied can be deadly.

are you kidding. i f*cking hate her stupid mom i'm so pissed. i want to smack everyone upside the head, good god.

okay now that it's been a bit (a week?), my head is clear and. i still Haaaate most of the characters in this novel. the mom? trash. the dad? trash but a little less, maybe recycling? the entire town? compost.
but seriously, it was extremely frustrating as a reader to experience the absolute cognitive dissonance of every single person in that god forsaken town. aaaaHhhhh! i have never ever read about characters who so obviously lacked even a crumb of critical thinking. the mom especially. yeah, i would still drop kick her into orbit if i could.
other than that, the writing was good and i liked the way the story was structured.

If you know me really well, you know I love a good psychological thriller, and Chevy Stevens never disappoints. I discovered her last summer when I won a copy of Always Watching and I've been hooked ever since, devouring all her books in a matter of weeks. I even got my mom hooked! For months all I heard was, "when is the new Chevy book coming out?" (my mom doesn't do the internet).
Toni and her boyfriend, Ryan, have been accused of murdering Toni's younger sister, Nicole, because they were the last to be seen with her. One thing I loved (among many) about this book was that it shifted timeframes. It switched between when Toni was in high school (when the murder occurred), when Toni was in jail, and after she's out of jail. I loved feeling like I was in Toni's head throughout the entire story.
You can always expect a twist in Steven's novels, and this one was no exception. Around the middle of the book, I had my suspicions about whodunit, and I was right, however, I had no idea what the motive was and it blew me away.
This book has characters you'll love, and many that you'll hate. At times, I found myself loving and hating the exact same character, which plays with your head and makes the story even more compelling.
The Canadian in me appreciates that her stories take place in Canada, and I love the Canadian references in it (Tim Hortons!).
This just came out, and I already want another book by Chevy Stevens.

I received an Advanced Copy of this book from Goodreads, and was so happy to read it before it's release.
I really liked this one a lot. It was a great mystery, travelling back and forth in time over the life of Toni, a girl who was bullied all through high school, then was wrongly convicted of the murder of her little sister. It was unbelievable the extreme bullying that she had to put up with, even long into adulthood. I totally hated Shauna and her evil ways. I felt so bad for Toni throughout.
It was a wild ride unravelling the who dunnit in the story. I was kept glued to the pages and totally shocked at how it all played out!!!
Another great page turner from Chevy Stevens!!

You know those moments when your parents made up their mind that you did something that you totally didn't do and it was the most frustrating thing? That's this book. Except there's murder involved. It's brilliant. I was seething with rage by the end.
Moral of the story: Listen to your parents and don't be jerks.
This takes Mean Girls to a whole new level. It's a quick read, very "roller coaster-ish". Every new chapter you can't help but think that the main character, Toni, can't catch a break. Heavy on the dysfunctional family vibes...it was good. I recommend it especially if you're into rooting for the underdog.

I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I loved Chevy Steven's previous books, but didn't think this one met the same standard. I would give it a 3.5. The first and middle parts of this book were fairly predictable and just not that intriguing. It alternated chapters between the past and Toni's time in jail and after. I did enjoy the ending and was surprised at the outcome. I'm still a huge fan, but feel like the earlier books were so much more suspenseful.
