Obsessed with the fact that she chose Chaol over Dorian. She’s brilliant.

New review 1/11/24: I have decided to reread Throne of Glass because I read the novella "Assassin's Blade" and had a newfound spark for the series. Throne of Glass is a spectacular novel because the central theme of the series and this first book is ACTION and not love. The last thing I want to read about is how some sad assassin and is now in love and lost her passion for the thrill for killing. Celeana (as we now know her) is spunky and beyond cool. I love her character and cannot wait to see what happens next (even though I already know). Dorian is such a sucker for women in charge, as we seee later in the series. I am praying I start to like Chaol again because I am low-key dreading reading Tower of Dawn again. However, Chaol killed Cain and deserves to be happy too.

So I read ACOTAR and here I am. I struggled with this. I was promised that the first book is a little slow and a stage setter. I couldn't get past the similarities to the hunger games. It's very Katniss, Gayle, and Peta. BUT I do love the characters. They grew on me quickly and I found myself routing for most of them. I like the back and forth between our two love interests. I have been promised that this goes on for awhile. I like that I can't predict what is going to happen in that department. I like the story and I feel like it does flow at a decent pace. This book just took me so long. I am excited to get deeper into this series.

I found the book very readable, and the audiobook helped bring the world and characters to life. It was a strong basic premise, working as a competition, but the inner feelings and relationships between the characters made it more interesting. I am not sure at this point of the series how much I like the world building and character backgrounds since we get far too little in this book, but it seems promising as a base to add onto. I wish some various revelations happened earlier, since they were guessable by a certain point. Also, the love triangle seems off because Selena is so deeply infatuated by one man then the next while she is speaking to each, it seems a bit ridiculous at times. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience and I look forward to reading more when the setting is different from the competition landscape. I hope we see some minor characters again.

A fine young adult fantasy tale that I thought I wasn’t going to like because it felt in the beginning like a bad version of Robin Hobb.
It turned out good and I want to continue the series. It’s a simple book but I want to see the characters continue their lives. I hope they get more complex.

I've first read this somewhen in 2013, and I remember being entirely captivated by this book for a week or so. But back then I didn't know this was supposed to be the start of a series and I just left it at reading the first book. When I finally saw the following volumes pop up in my local bookshop I remembered reading Throne of Glass, but I barely remembered anything that happened and I didn't really want to go back to re-read.
So here we are, I finally picked the series back up again, planning on reading it in its entirety now...and damn I sure love this book. I was actually planning on reading it spread out over two days, but well what's a girl supposed to do when it's 2 am and there are only 100 pages left - go to bed? NEVER!
It's definitely not perfect and while I was reading I was also recognizing the parts that already bothered me seven years ago.
But what can I say other than: "I am just trash for court-based/royalty-involving YA things."
Also I love all the characters already...tho I am a bit confused as to why everyone has a name that seems directly out of a random name generator and Dorian just gets to have Dorian. How is he the one with the normal name?

Anyway - I loved this, 4/5 Stars - let's sleep and then move on to Crown of Midnight, I am very excited.
