Ahead of its time with its thoughtful & vulnerable subjects. King sure knows how to write characters worthy of hatred. The different formats are unique but cause the pacing to jump too much. I respect the boldness to make it bleak & hopeless.

It took me a really long time to get passed the first chapter. Like, two months after I initially logged it into goodreads. It was going to be my, "Halloween Book". The lack of reading wasn't because I was disinterested or the writing was poor; this is Stephen King, after all. It was the fact that I had seen the film and was more than familiar with the story and Sissy Spacek's chilling performance was really hard to ignore.

But once I started, I couldn't put it down. The book added so much more to my relationship with the story. It's not without its' faults though. There are a lot of questionable instances of racial slurs in the book. I'm not certain if it was a stylistic case or the time it was published or what. I'm not sure why SK felt to include some of the language he did. This language disappointed me.

Overall, it was a really intriguing dive into bullying and mental illness masked behind a horror story.

Really wanted to like this book because I love the movie and enjoyed The Shining, but i just couldn’t buy this one. The scene at the beginning told from a man’s perspective (he doesn’t seem to understand how pads actually work?) was an immediate turn-off, as were the laughable descriptions of female sexuality. I ended up skimming to the end.
