True story of a great white shark that attacked beach goers on the eastern U.S. shore in 1916. This was the start of recreational swimming and the young great white shark was confused as to his prey.

The events were inspiration for Benchelys' horror classic Jaws. Capuzzo adds science to the development and behavior of sharks, particularly the great white, to the account.

Audio book narrator was adequate.

What?! This is easily the most riveting nonfiction I have read in a while. Turns out that sharks are fascinating (and horrifying dead-in-the-eyes monsters of the sea). I love when a book transports you into the mindset of a totally different age. The author does an amazing job taking the reader directly into the summer of 1916. I can't believe people just didn't even think sharks were capable of attacking humans. I guess Americans just felt so indestructible then.

So many fabulous facts: like how great whites never stop growing, or in utero cannibalism, or the razor sharp sandpaper skin. Crazy survival and epic death-by-shark stories abound. I cannot believe that 9 ft shark swam up a creek fifty miles from the coast! Or the men in the fisherboat story, or all the heroic characters lunging into the water to rescue victims. I loved this book!! 🦈 But now I am never swimming out alone (on the beach or in a creek), or with a dog, or with a cut, or during high tide, or during a full moon. DON'T MESS WITH SHARKS.

A well written story. A lot of nice details. The author dido a good job of setting the whole story. I liked the way he introduced all of the people involved and gave some good background as well.

The writing was at times a little dry. The book also seemed to just end with no real closure. However there doesn't seem to be any closure on the true story either.
