This needs to be a Netflix show or something. Enough said that I read it in two days.

#librarything so glad I won a copy from Librarything. This is one of the best memoirs I have read in a long time. I hope she continues writing books because she is so amazing. I miss Obama so much after reading this one.

I'm glad I took some time from when I finished this to writing the review.
#1: I needed to mentally separate myself from the Obama portion of it and think about it for what it was. A young, stenographer's story about her time in the Obama White House and everything that entailed from her personal and professional life.
#2: I needed to stop being so judgmental of her relationship with Jason (spoiler alert: he sucks) and remember what it was like for me at that age.

Becky Dorey-Stein is a young, college grad who is looking for her next step in life. She finds a posting for a job on CRAIGSLIST (I'll be honest friends - if I knew all it would have taken to get in the Obama White House was to look on CRAIGSLIST for crying out loud...but I digress) and finds herself in the White House. I didn't realize that the stenographer would travel with the President wherever he went (but in hindsight it totally makes sense) and wow - what a life. How cool to travel to all those places and be on the front lines of history. I loved so much how appreciative she was for her job and what she got to do everyday. The last thing you want to read about is someone who doesn't understand what they're a part of. Also, her writing is really good.

I definitely think that there are people that just won't like this and that's because it's a memoir of a twenty something girl who deals with twenty something life issues with the Obama White House as a backdrop. If that's not for you, then neither is this book.

Am glad I read it and look forward to seeing what she does next!

While I really enjoyed so many aspects of this book, the author is so ridiculous and eye-roll inducing at times that it knocks it down a star for me. I know am being harsh though, because if it is her truth who am I to judge it? More about 20 something drama than politics.

It made me think less of the Obama administration though, why would anyone hire the idiots she describes in this book?

If you lived in DC in the 2010s, you need this book.

If a man has ever misled you, you need this book.

If all of your friends are moving away, you need this book.

If you can't stop making bad decisions, you need this book.

If you love DC, if you hate DC, if you miss DC, if you're leaving DC, you need this book.

I never do rereads, but honestly, I think I could pick this one back up on an annual basis and find something new every time. Beck Dorey-Stein writes with such painful honesty about the realities of being a 20-something with a glamorous job and a broken heart. It's beautiful and hysterical and gut-wrenching and everything I love about memoirs.

The New York times described this book as C-SPAN meets Sex In The City. It was too much of the latter for my liking. While I found the the descriptions of what it is like to travel with the president interesting, they were bogged down by too many stories of the author's miserable love life. I felt like I was watching someone repeatedly touching a hot stove. You keep getting burned, so why don't you just stop. Anyway, there was some value here, just not very much.

Meh. This book was just fine, an easy read that I flew through on a lazy Saturday. It wasn't anything too exciting but had it's moments. There are some fun cameos by President Obama and other names you might recognize if you follow politics but at times I found the author hard to root for. In my opinion there are better written and more interesting books by Obama staff out there.

I liked this, but I could have used MUCH less of her situationship. I'm not necessarily judging her for the decisions she makes or moralizing about them, but the on and off and on again just isn't interesting to me as a person not personally embroiled in the emotional rollercoaster.
