I was choosing between reading this or Commonwealth and my mum said it didn’t matter which I chose because either way I’d be in good hands with Ann patchet. After reading two of hers now I see what she means. This was another lovely read, enjoyed on the lakefront in queenstown.

A story spanning a lifetime of family relationships, abandonment, loss, death, grief, companionship, betrayal, trust and rekindling. It explores what it means to be something to someone. And well, the Gatsby-esque house to fire up your imagination and paints an intricate mental picture for you.
Personally, not my favourite kind of genre, leaves me a bit morose when I finish the book.

Character study of the women in the main character's life. Not much happens, but once you accept that, the book is good

Not for me, slow and difficult to understand what’s happening.

The writing in this book was really well done and I liked the back and forth between the past and present however I feel like towards the middle of the book to the near end was rushed and I didn’t enjoy the whole aspect of the mother. I liked how real everyone felt though as another reader wrote.

“The Dutch House” by Ann Patchett - I don’t have the words right now and I’m not sure I can even write an eloquent enough review. s week later and I’m still thinking about this book. How this didn’t win the Pulitzer prize I do not know!!

And for someone who is on an audiobook kick, I have two words: Tom Hanks!! YASSSSSS!!
