Fruits basket is a heart warming story appropriate for almost any age and just as entertaining. With a lovable protagonist it's simplicity and epic turns tug at the heart making you laugh and cry with each character no matter which one they are; bringing back the childlike notion that everyone can and is good only sometimes doing bad

Honestly, I didn't think I'd like this so much. I've always said "Anime is weird. I have no interest in it." But my friends were reading it and loving it and recommending it... so I borrowed it. And devoured it. A fun, witty, fast little read. ^.^ And I love the different style! I'm a classic british lit kind of girl, and so this totally different format is a great change of pace.

I have read the cute, heartbreaking story of Fruits Basket years ago. And I read it about 3 or 4 times, maybe more. The story is a bit cliche, but the characters are memorable.

A story about closed off loners that broken, depressed and sad individuals hoping for a happiness they could never achieve. Each characters deals with the pain and loneliness differently, learning how to embrace happiness and bloom into individuals they never thought they could be.

Its beautifully written, heartwarming, with relatable emotions anyone can feel. This is one any manga avid reader should go through at least once. A classic that should honestly be recommend by anyone.

Do I recommend it:

After rewatching the anime recently, I decided to reread the Fruits Basket manga volumes that I had read and then finally finish reading the rest of the manga. The last time I tried to read the series, all of the volumes hadn't been released in the U.S. yet. For the volumes of the manga that are covered in the anime (which are few), I think I prefer the anime for the most part, but I'm excited to see how the series resolves.

I've always been fascinated by both the Western and the Chinese zodiac. Probably partially because of the cute animals, the story drew me in right away by its creative use of the Chinese zodiac legend.

After rereading Volume 1, my major question was: what happened to the little zodiac ornaments that Tohru sees drying on the porch at Shigure's house? Although they provide an excellent introduction to the story, they seem to disappear after that. At any rate, they never make a reappearance in the anime. Maybe they show up again in the manga though.

Last finished 9/2/2011. Rating reviewed 12/27/2022.

This was the first manga series that I've read all the way through--mostly because the anime turned out to be dissatisfying, unlike the other series I've enjoyed (both shounen and shouju). It was quick and lighthearted, but I had a hard time giving in to the weirdness of it. There were many scenarios of romance despite large age gaps (always young woman/older man) that I just couldn't really get behind. That poisoned the rest of the series for me, a bit. But I read it all the way through, so that says something compelling about the characters at least.

- I'm so confused, but I'm still interested.

- Yuki looks like a girl! Some of the characters even think it's a girl.

- Hugs? That is what turns them into their Zodiac? Kinda weird!

- There is always a crazy girl in every Anima/Manga isn't there? Kagura is going to be annoying!

- Tohru has a good deal! She gets to live with those guys in exchange for keeping house. It's kinda like a Snow White situation but better.

- I feel like every girl in Anima/Manga is an amazing cook! I'm so jealous!
