I truly haven't gotten sucked into a book this way in so long. It's just an incredible multigenerational tale. Anne Rice does it like no other

This book is a challenge to rate. Until the last 150 pages or so, it was going to be four stars. It is impossible to ignore the many uncomfortable and problematic aspects of this novel. Additionally, the history of the Mayfair witches is dense—be prepared for 400 pages (nearly 40%) of reading about 300 years of this family. I found it intriguing, but it is daunting and reads like nonfiction.

That said, I think the history made the payoff of the final act even more satisfying. This is truly masterfully written.

this book is wild and messed up and entirely too long. I did not need four hundred pages of recounting the thirteen generations of mayfair witches. I did not need 50+ pages of Michael talking about how he would renovate the house.

also, bet rowan wishes she'd listened to Ellie now.

Hard to digest the writing style
