Admittedly, Children of Time took me longer to read than I would have liked. That is both, due to me and due to the nature of certain portions of the book.

I loved this book. It is very well written, has a compelling story, explores idea inherent to life and humanity and makes you relate to a species of sentient arachnids (which is something I never thought I’d say). There were certain parts where the pace slowed a bit (due to the nature of the worldbuilding on such a large and intricate scale) but if you like the ‘science’ part of sci-fi, you’ll love this book.

There’s a reason it’s won awards.

terrible.

do not read unless you have terrible taste.

I could rant and rave about how bad it is, but why?

The one redeeming quality is that I could skip sooo many pages, just skim and skim and skip and skip and still get the gist of the story.

I didn't bother to read the last page.

Everything with the spiders was phenomenal. The human parts were less interesting. I see the value of including their storyline, but Holsten was a nothing character.

I read a book with giant sentient space spiders battling humans on the verge of extinction... And was rooting for the spiders? Color me very impressed with this story.

I was rooting for the Portia's and Becky's (spiders) because the way their (female-centered) world was built was so intriguing. And watching a civilization grow as it gains Understanding and adapts to challenges and figures out a leadership/governance structure is so thought-provoking. I'm glad I had a book club to chat with about this.

The world-building is also epic - spans so many generations as the story alternates between a spaceship of humans who evacuated Earth and are headed to a new planet and these spiders that create a full spider society on that green new world. I imagine the author could tell so many more sweeping stories on other planets with other creatures.

One note - it takes a bit to get used to the sparse writing, the alternating chapters, and the pacing of the book. It took me a month to read the first 20% of this book and then I read the rest in two days.
