Multi-layered, great sub-plot. So why didn't Harry entertain the idea that Franky was murdered right away?

This is easily the best book in the Harry Bosch series to date. If you are,
as I normally am, a series dipper-you drop in and out of a series at random
places-then this is a good place to drop in. But really, while I don't
normally have strong feelings either way, I would tell you that this series
might be a good one to read in order.
The storyline here actually tore at the fabric of my soul. Let me try to
explain:
Flip to the opening pages, and you join Detective Harry Bosch and his two
colleagues. They've been called out under unusual circumstances. A black
lawyer who made it a career of suing Los Angeles policemen, has been
brutally murdered. The death occurred on a small railroad system known as
Angels Flight. The lawyer frequently played the race card, yanking it from
any deck he could find to ensure that he got good TV ratings and that the
black churches in the community are in lock step with him. If Bosch and his
colleagues make a single misstep, the city will break out in 1992-style
rioting.
One of the cases the black lawyer was suing over involved a black ex-con
turned carwash worker. One day before the black man was arrested for the
other case, he was washing the car of a wealthy family who made its living
by selling cars throughout the Los Angeles area. The family's 12-year-old
daughter was there in the car at the time of the wash, as were her school
books.
Days later, she is murdered, and all the evidence points back to the ex-con
who washed that car. But that was far from the truth.
As Bosch investigates, he and his colleagues stumble into a viol child porn
site that includes the pictures of the 12-year-old girl who has been
murdered, and the realization that the ex-con didn't do it becomes a fact.
This will tear at your soul because of the descriptions of the child porn
site and how it works. You'll want the death penalty for anyone who deals
in that kind of behavior online. And the ripple effect of this horror is
murder and suicide.
This is the best Bosch book to date, and you struggle with him as you watch
his marriage fall apart-a marriage so recently entered into with much joy in
the previous book. But at least Bosch seems to have quit smoking-or has he?

4,5 ster.

If I ever needed a murder solved, I would so want Bosch on the case. He is relentless, never leaving a stone unturned.

Angels Flight is a historic landmark in LA. The two trolley cars even have pet names. But the nostalgic tram system becomes historic for another reason, a high profile murder.
When Harry Bosch is called in the middle of the night by Deputy Chief Irving to come out to the crime scene he is surprised. Angels Flight is not part of the Hollywood division and Harry is immediately aware that the case will be very unique and probably very political. He soon discovers that is the case when he arrives on scene. One of the victims is a high profile lawyer that is famous for suing the LAPD. So not only does most of the police department become suspects, the minority community that the victim championed will be outraged by the murder. The potential to relive the riots of 1992 is highly likely if the case is not handled correctly.
Harry must maneuver the politics and racial tensions to find the truth. He will get to the bottom of it no matter what the implications and repercussions.
This is another excellent mystery/thriller by Connelly. Highly recommend this series to all genre fans.

This was a re-read.
Another great Harry Bosch thriller.
I would like to point out how realistic (to me) these
investigations and police procedurals seem as opposed
to many of the others purporting to be the same genre.
Harry Bosch novels just seem to flow properly and
cleverly .
This one is again recommended.

Harry and his team (Kizmin Rider & Harry Edgar) are called to a murder scene at Angels Flight. They soon find they've been assigned the worst of cases as the victim is a high profile civil rights attorney who is in the middle of a multimillion dollar lawsuit against the LAPD. As with many of his cases, Harry's just drawn a really thorny, short stick.
I literally could not stop listening to this story with its many layers, twists, turns and ugliness. Harry has to look internally for suspects and it's not pretty as the city is poised to erupt into violence over this murder. This isn't an easy story and my original hunch (which I abandoned) turned out to be dead on, which was pretty exciting. The ending was almost poetic.
The change in narrators was a fairly seamless transition, though I miss Dick Hill's version of Jerry Edgar. I know there will be another change but, for now, I'm satisfied with the performance.
Still wild about Harry and this series.
