undeniably a very powerful and harrowing story. i enjoyed the weaving of biblical stories. i just think that the verse aspect was underused; it had no bearing on the text except for a few occasions where the author played with the shape (like to funnel the text down to a "vanishing point").

I deeply wish I could give this book for than 5 stars. This is BEAUTIFULLY written and overwhelmingly inspiring. It tells the heartbreaking, fragile story of Artemisia Gentileschi, a painter in old Rome. Finding her strength while dealing with the struggle of living in a man’s world, Artemisia stays true to her soul and what she knows is right. This mix of poetry and prose is so pure and immaculately layered. I cannot get over this book. Thank you, Joy.

This was a super fast read. Listened on audiobook and it was a harrowing tale inspired by Artemisia Gentileschi, who was an Italian painter in the Boroque period. I found the way this story was told to be absolutely fascinating, as Artemisia's tale was told through the lens of her late-mother's stories that Artemisia had remembered from childhood. These biblical stories of Susanna and Judith had fueled Artemisia's drive toward justice for herself and for women of her time period. It is absolutely inspiring. However, my only reason for a 4 star rating was the narrator Xe Sands. Sands was enjoyable to listen to, but the acting felt just a little bit too forced for me to be fully immersed in the story. I think if I would have read Blood Water Paint physically then this really could have been a five star read!

Artemisia Gentileschi loves to paint more than anything else, but is unhappy that her only prospects are to marry or continue as her father's painting apprentice. In this world run by men, she has no power and must watch as her talented art is signed away with her father's name. When Artemisia is raped, she must decide if she will stay quiet or if she has the power to challenge the world around her. With her mother's stories and her paintings to guide her, Artemisia will find her strength and a way through to healing. Told in beautiful verse, this book is a feminist tale about the power of women and the power of story. While the subject is difficult, McCullough's verse is gentle, thoughtful, and powerful. This book is readable to any YA reader, but the content may be most appropriate to those in upper high. Content warning: rape.

This book was a melting pot of many things, but in the best way possible. It made me google Artemisia and know more about her story. This all shows how the autor cared about her story. Its angsty, poetic and so distant, yet so actual! The only minor flaw is that half of the story is discribed in the premice, but i understand the reason.
