June challenge
it was a REALLY interesting book. I thought the writing was a little simple, I think it would have even annoyed my 12 year old (since it's supposed to be written for his grand children?) but it was only mildly distracting.
The story was great, but it did get a little heavy on facts.

This book is incredible! I love historical fiction especially stories around World War II. This story about the Navajo people is very well written and a great tribute to the Navajos that contributed so much to the United States during World War II. I can easily read this book again in the future, is going to love it! I highly recommend this book, and I am so glad I stumbled across it recently!
Read this in middle school and loved it. This is definitely a book I need to reread now that I'm older.
Excellent piece of history. Writing could have been stronger.
A well-told story of a time in history that not many are aware. It's a novel of how the Navajo code talkers came to be. They weren't allowed to tell their story until much later due to the secrecy of the program.
It's more than just the beginning of the code talker program. It's about how the main character, Ned Begay, grew up with his family, going to the government-run boarding school where he and his fellow Navajos were told to erase all things Navajo. They were punished if they spoke their language. They were given new names by the school based on their Navajo names. Their clothing and jewelry was taken to sell by the school to trading posts for money that the school kept.
Through all this, Begay kept strong and in good humor as he was taught by his family. When the Marine recruiter came to the high school to look for Navajos, Begay wanted to join, but was too young. His parents gave permission the next year and off he went to help in WWII.
The first group of Navajos developed the code that the following Navajos utilized to keep the Japanese from discovering war plans and maneuvers.
We see the war through Begay's eyes in all its brutality and camaraderie.
I am glad I was able to listen to the story as an audiobook. I could listen to the narrator, Derrick Henry, speak the Navajo language and not have to guess at pronunciation. He brought the story to life for me.
I can highly recommend this for any history buff to learn more about a key part of WWII.
