Beautiful, maddening, frightening, heartbreaking. Two times this year I have read a George Saunders collection in a day. I think that alone should be a selling point. I have thought about the stories in Civilwarland every day since reading it. I do not see this collection being any different in terms of impact. The title story alone is worth the price of the book. Everything a book should be is in the writing of Saunders.

NYT BBoTC #54
I found this to be a waste of time for about 60% of the book. There were a couple of stories that I did understand the subliminal message in but the vast majority of them went over my head and honestly just felt like weird short stories written to get out of writer's block. I wouldn't recommend this book to literally anyone and I would love to know the NYT's reasoning for putting it on their list.
