Wow. I was surprised again and again by this slim but moving novel. Absolutely gorgeous writing.

Sad. Confusing. And, lovely.

A good choice to end an old year.

I had an opportunity to see the author talk about this novel when it first hit the shelves. I thought The Confessions of Max Tivoli was brilliant so I was anxious read Greer's latest effort. Greer talked about his approach to research for the novel and his desire to capture San Francisco in the 1950s. Even though this is a slim novel at just under 200 pages, Greer constructs an intriguing plot with twists that inspired me to read the book in a couple of sittings, delivers characters with unexpected dimensions, and also captures a decade in San Francisco from multiple points of view.

I really don't want to say much more than that for fear I might give up an interesting detail that should not be revealed, but I very much enjoyed my time with this novel. Greer is such a talent. It may sound strange to say this, but he is a true architect of language. I admire such precision.
