I'm disappointed :( The plot was good, the world-building was good and I still want to read the second book cause I can't let things go, but everything else was just so blah. The romance was completely out of nowhere, with no tension, no build-up, no nothing, simply Oh hi we are in love bye, the spice was terrible terrible terrible, so terrible. I was so excited about this and was disappointed. I hope the second book is better.

Re-read for book 2 prep and I swear I loved it more the second time! There is so kind of magic dust sprinkled through this book that makes you so immersed in the world I’m looking for mice to befriend 🤞🏼😂 honestly couldn’t love it more if I tried and can not wait for the rest of the series !!

I like the concept and the potential of the story, the magic system and the plot. I didn't love the FMC or MMC particularly. I didn't feel they held a lot of depth but maybe that changes in the future. The romance wasn't for me, I didn't find it convincing, and the possessive MMC style isnt to my taste.

Wasn’t the best written book in the world, but I was hooked on the characters and the plot. Definitely excited to see where this story goes

One of my book groups recommended the book By the Orchid and the Owl, and I’m so glad they did.
This book is the first instalment in Mariah Montoya’s The Esholian Institute series. It follows the story of 18-year-old Rayna during her first year at the Institute, where she will receive her magic and be trained to use it over the next five years.
I found this book to be fantastic! It features elements of fantasy, magic, romance, dystopian themes, and games/trials. The adventure and mind trap the main characters' navigation to create a fantastic narrative.
I loved everything about this book: the plot, the twists, the characters, and the world-building. The characters are relatable and well-developed, the story is intricate yet easy to follow, and the magic system is unique.
I loved this book and cannot wait for the second instalment!
