Initially this story reminded me of an early Marian Keyes novel, but quickly I realised that it was actually an emotional story about friendship and life changes and making peace with your messy life and what are you going to do about it?
There was drama but there was also great maturity from the characters so it played out how you’d always hope the tough situations to go in real life with the benefit of hindsight when you need it. There were so many parts I wanted to highlight, because 1) they were astute observations or 2) they were funny and quiet as hell.
I loved it

i read a lot of romance. i know the formulas. i open every first page knowing full well what to expect. i have a rough outline of the plot drawn out in my head, and for the most part, that outline is perfectly accurate, if missing a detail or two.
somehow, this book has evaded every one of my predictions. i found myself gasping (aloud) at reveals. not one thing in this book was plotted in my rough outline. and that’s what makes it such a revelation.
it made me laugh out loud (me, in a coffee shop biting my lip over “this is turning into OJ Simpson’s search for his wife’s killer, isn’t it? i will leave no golf course or beach resort uncombed!”// alternatively: “you’re a fucking menace in polka dots, sister.”) and simultaneously it captures an image of grief and loss so sharp and nuanced that i felt it in my own chest??? and sometimes it does the two within the same page???
anyway, it’s good.
