haven't finished the whole but have read enough, caveat being that I've had to prepare for her being in class but this is a staggering piece of literature. the thing that kept popping into mind: how is she getting away with this?

Loneliness, animal nature, and the pain of others come to great effect in “Judas Goat” (a horrifying trick the title introduced me to). I adored this and look forward to more work by Bates.

I’ve been thinking about these poems a lot in the weeks since I finished this book. They feel intimate to me, like they’re being whispered in my ear. Quiet, but not in the sense of softness. Rather, as haunted places are quiet. The way a forest can be quiet and beautiful even as something menacing might lurk unseen nearby. I definitely need to read this again.
