my god. i've tried so hard to read this book so many damn times and i just can't do it. the messages she give out are thought-provoking and important but dear lord this woman repeats herself endlessly. i realize it's likely done for emphasis or something like that but it just makes this book such a bore and a chore to get through. i also realize that the writing probably flows much more smoothly in its original french but still. wrap it up.

Een klassieker in de feministische filosofie dat ik gelezen heb voor ik allerlei andere feministische boekwerken ging lezen. Ik was denk ik net begonnen met studeren en was zwaar onder de indruk van de grondige en rigoureuze manier waarop de Beauvoir de beide seksen en natuurlijk vooral de vrouw als tweede sekse, als de ander analyseerde en duidde. Allerhande zaken (zoals de stompzinnigheid en "repetitiveness" van veel "vrouwelijk" werk zoals het huishouden, maar ook menstruatie en seksualiteit) werden tot op het bot gefileerd en gerelateerd aan de (achtergestelde) situatie van de vrouw en dat leverde mij toendertijd vele inzichten en eye-openers op.
Het wordt wel eens de bijbel van het feminisme genoemd en het verdient deze titel ook. Beetje afstoffen her en der, en dan kan het nog prima een eeuw of wat mee.

This was way too dense for me when I read it just after college, but now having been through a PhD program, I found it very interesting. Much is still very relevant, and when things have changed, that gives food for thought as well (for example, we spend a lot less time ironing these days). De Beauvoir’s analysis is exhaustive and gives much to chew on, even when I don’t agree with all of her points.
