I can see the appeal. Rooney hits on relatable themes with bright and easy flowing prose. There were moments and sentences I thought were provocative.
But the majority of this book is four fairly obnoxious, self absorbed characters talking to, psycho analyzing and boning each other. For every genuinely insightful moment there are 3 or 4 dressed up platitudes. Much of the dialogue is over dramatic and predictable. By the end I did not care what happened to any of these people.
I was excited for my first Sally Rooney but this one just felt like a pretty straightforward low stakes romance with high brow prose.

cottage to. Continue her writing after a breakdown. She has a close friend Eileen who is less successful and works in Dublin as a publishing assistant. Alice hooks up (unrealistically) with Felix who works in a warehouse. The story includes numerous and a sometimes tedious stream of emails between Alice and Eileen about big life issues which are both deep and a tad depressing.
Alice takes Felix on a book tour to Rom. Eileen is in love with an old friend Simon who has deep religious beliefs.
Predictable ending
