First: i will say mostly and above all that we need more books like this and that generally speaking, it is good for society and for queer and trans and nonbinary people everywhere to have open conversations about gender.
So, although not entirely useless, this book still left much to be desired. Format was confusing and seemed to not be certain of what it was trying to do/be. No citations or works cited or bibliography?? Lots of blanket statements without reference or evidence given. For a person who knows nothing, this book would achieve maybe something, for those of us who know plenty this achieves nothing and for those of us who are already anti-gender diversity or at least skeptical this may even do more harm than good.
Maybe my standards as a gender studies minor are two high? So i still want to emphasize that on a broader scale this is good and important. But i wouldn’t give it to my older family members to teach them about gender diversity, and i think that says a lot.
Conclusion: yes to this and we still need more and better.

This is basically a coffee table book that covers the basics of feminist thinking about gender using historical and contemporary examples to show that feminist and LGBTQ+ issues intersect and that the understanding and experience of gender as fluid, while not new is certainly a current and welcome trend in the West.
I bought the kindle version and the photographs have a strong impact but I imagine holding a printed edition in your hands is better.
I personally would have liked to have had endnotes or references, particularly in cases where the names of writers/thinkers are given, but I think because it is meant as a very readable introduction they are deliberately left out.
I’ve rated it as three stars but maybe it should be four. Interestingly, despite the very recent publication date, the anti-trans moral panic is barely covered and some parts already feel a tiny bit dated.
Nevertheless, if you have a friend who knows nothing about gender, feminism or related issues and who is not an academic reader then this will be a perfect entry point.

History and explanation about gender and sex. Basically gender is a social construct depending on the culture, upbringing and age you live in. Very nice and comforting to read all this. Knowing there are many other cultures with a third gender and that trans people have been around for ages and is not some 20/21st century made up thing. Still very sad and unbelievable that some people can’t accept that this exists. Let people just be people and be themselves.

My mom has been curious about current gender identity information. This is a lovely small book that gives a great introduction to the topic without seeming overwhelming. Here's a mini-review:
Pros:
- Good history and provides lots of context
- Academic tone while still having a clear thesis
- Easy to read/digest! Large text, lots of photos, bite-sized snippets of info
Cons:
- Very condensed! Doesn't go into a lot of depth (still provides a great intro in that you can research more later)
- Not a lot of current discourse or terminology, e.g., explaining various terms for non-binary identities or anything

Exactly what it says on the cover: a primer. The author is a professor, and this is about the material I would expect to be covered in an intro to gender studies course. Well-structured and with a good eye on the discussions within gender activism, instead of just a dogmatic 'this is feminism'. That being said: I didn't find much new stuff here. But give this to your children, by all means.
