Can't believe they didn't say "all work and no play makes jack a dull boy" even one damn time.
Real talk though what the fuck did Stanley have against Hallorann. He absolutely deserved better in the movie. I think that the unraveling of Jack but also Danny and Wendy is really fascinating. Spooky and absolutely unhinged and fucking delightful. Great payoff and a great listen.

LOVE LOVE LOVE - Except the last 10 percent. I skimmed that part.
This was my first Stephen King book ever. I am so glad I read it. I loved the story revolving around Danny, although I found it hard to believe he was 5... Even a super smart 5. If he would have been 8 or 9 I would have believed it better.
The hedge animals are my favorite. I love how they moved when you where not looking and then would go right back.
Negative - I NEVER knew so many hateful words for African Americans before reading this book :/ I kept trying to tell myself that it is 'period' and those words would have been used in reference to black people. Still in 2012 in a community that is very open minded, They stung.
5 out of 5 stars, I for sure can see re reading many times over.
I've told everyone who sits still long enough to read it. Now to look for an epic read to follow this!

This isn’t usually my genre, but regardless it was fantastic
Somehow, this is the book that has managed to make me love reading again after a 3 week reading slump, so I highly recommend
The only thing is to me at least, the first 50-80 pages were quite boring, and I just needed the action
It wasn’t that big of a deal breaker though and I LOVED the ending, so gruesome

The Shining has been one of my favorite movies for years, but I feel like I’m unable to enjoy it as much now that I’ve read the book and seen how much was left out and changed in the film. Of the two, I preferred the story of the novel. I think King did a great job creating nuanced and interesting characters with clear backstories and motivation. I also think he did an incredible job with the writing of specifically Danny’s scenes. It really brought me back to the feeling of being a scared little kid frozen in fear by my imagination. For that reason, the scene of Danny staring at the fire house worried it would come after him like a snake really stuck with me. However my complaint, like many others have said, is King’s long winded writing style. In my opinion this book was just too long for it’s content and would have benefitting from some editing down. I think the story alone would be 5 stars to me but that was lessened by the length.
Graphic: Violence, Racial slurs, and Domestic abuse
Moderate: Racism

I've been wanting to watch this movie for so long I finally decided to read the book before watching the movie went into the book actually not knowing much about it This was a great read. Fantastic storytelling
When you start the book Jack has an interview you with hotel manager Stuart Ullman. The job is winter caretaker at the remote, 110 room Overlook Hotel located forty miles west of the closest town, Sidewinder, Colorado. As the interview progresses, each man increasingly resents the other, Ullman is conducting the interview, “Of course, you wouldn’t allow your son up in the attic under any circumstances” Ullman says, referring to Torrance’s five-year-old son Danny. Torrance needs the job so he simply flashes his “toothy PR smile” while repeating “Officious little prick” over and over again in his mind. Ullman resents Torrance because he is forced to hire him, “I’ll be perfectly frank with you, Mr. Torrance. Albert Shockley is a powerful man with large interest in the Overlook…he has made his wishes in this caretaking matter quite obvious. He wants you hired. I will do so. But if I’d been given a free hand in this matter, I would not have taken you on
And that is how this started again creepy stuff starts happening as soon as they are in the hotel objects moving seen stuff out of the corner of there eye
