I love the concept of this plot more than I love this book. The execution was a bit clunky for me, with a lot of exposition on the reasons why I should find things scary, or sad, or significant ...
I did not feel particularly connected to any of the characters, and was outright annoyed by a lot of them, especially the guy not believing his wife when she said she had been strangled by the grandfather. Very odd incident to begin with, and an even odder reaction from him. A lot of little things like that seemed to be thrown in to make everything seem scary, but it was just increasingly confusing.
Overall I didn't like this particular presentation of a dying Italian village with the haunted house above creepy catacombs, but it has the bones of a very compelling story. I just wish the writing hadn't been so mechanical, the plot points so random, and the characters so bland.

This book had a little of everything. Young couple making a fresh new start, a seriously haunted house and possession!! It starts off with Tommy and Kate moving to his ancestral home town of Becchina Italy with hopes of rejuvenating the dying town. What happens next is a fast paced ride straight to hell! Once again Christopher gives us characters we love and truly care about, against an evil so dark and scary it’s hard to put it down!! He is becoming one of my favorite authors!

As someone who has thought about doing exactly what the couple in this book does, with moving to Europe under "cheap" housing, this story spoke to me..... and maybe shed some doubt on me doing this.

This is my first Christopher Golden novel, and it did not disappoint. I was hooked after the first few chapters, and as the story developed and secrets revealed, I could not put the book down. The cover also drew me in with all of it's colors, and the hidden skull motif (which seems to be a favorite of Golden). This is a story that will haunt you both while reading, and long after the last page is turned.
