Another creepy horror masterpiece by a master of the genre. As much as I want to move to a little town in Italy…maybe not this one.

Update 4.15.24
I changed my rating from 4.5 to 5 because I literally cannot stop thinking about this book. It's started me on a quest to find another horror novel to listen to that made me feel like this one did

This audio book was really quite good. My first horror audio book and it had a full cast of voice actors! There were many parts that gave me full body chills with how creepy and unsettling they were. Having the full cast added to the level of creepiness. It was a bit slow at first which honetsly is to be expect to get the story setup. There was a lot of great use of foreshadowing to make the horror parts that much more impactful.
The rats screaming for the first time was genuinely terrifying. Also the part where the grandfather attacked Katie literally had me stop in my tracks as I was listening to this while on my walks. Hearing the demon say Thomas using the rats to speak in the catacombs was also chill inducing
This is an excellent horror novel! Scary but not enough to give me nightmares. At least so far. The way it ended left it open to the possibility of a second book. I don't know if that will happen, but it would be nice if it did. This was my first Christopher Golden book, but it won't be my last.

creepy AF story - if this was a movie I'd nope the fuck out. That said,  some of the dialogue between the couple was was cringy, but they were in their mid 20’s? Maybe young people talk like that? I dunno.

Summary:

Tommy and Kate Puglisi have made the tough decision to pick up their lives and move to a remote town in Italy. There are several good reasons for doing this. One, they're taking advantage of the $1 house sale. Two, they're closer to Tommy's ailing parents.

Unfortunately, there are a few negatives that they were only made aware of once it was too late. For example, their new home has many problems – not least of which are the hidden rooms. It seems as if the more they dig into the past, the more the past consumes them.

Review:

Huh. I've got to say, I've never read anything quite like The House of Last Resort. It's dark and twisted, sure. It starts out feeling more like a mystery or thriller, but as we get further into the story, the paranormal elements begin to seep it.

Usually, I love it when a book goes this route. So I was thrilled - at first. I don't know. Maybe this book did a good job getting under my skin? But the ending of The House of Last Resort felt so...unsatisfying. And I get it – not all horror novels end satisfyingly...

The problem is that, once again, I've found a thriller that had me completely hooked for about eighty percent of the book (maybe even ninety percent). Unfortunately, the ending didn't live up to the rest of the novel, leaving me disappointed.

Highlights:
Paranormal Horror
Mystery/Thriller
Secret Tunnels & Rooms
Digging up the past

Trigger Warnings:
Death of a parent
Gaslighting/Toxic relationships
