Well, that was racist and sexist. I guess I shouldn't be surprised from a Tarzan story, but it would have been easier to overlook if the story had been stronger.

While I enjoy seeing some of the difficulties of Tarzan adjusting to "civilized" life, as well as his take on civilization, the entire plot is driven heavily by melodrama. While it's an okay read, there really isn't enough substance to keep me reading for anything except as a fluff book.

Sequel to Tarzan of the Apes. Another example of ERB's wonderfully imaginative story-telling. Though again it deals with timeless themes of honor and courage and nobility and love, this time it doesn't end with the tragic nobility of a self-sacrificing Tarzan. In the end, this time, he gets the girl.

I loved the first Tarzan book, almost fanatically. It's one of my favorite pulp adventures. This one kind of wanders. It eventually all adds up but it's not particularly subtle at getting there, the way the first book was.

There's also some fairly objectionable racial politics in here at certain points, but that's sort of par for the course with Burroughs.

I want to have liked this more. I absolutely loved the first Tarzan book, but I felt like this sequel fell a little flat. One of the things I enjoyed about Tarzan of the Apes was it's simplicity. This one was all over the place. It felt like several Tarzan short stories strung together. It lacked the cohesion and polish of the original. It started alright with Tarzan and D'Arnot, but that grew old quickly. The "Tarzan as a secret agent" section was terrible. I really enjoyed the section with Tarzan and the Waziri, but things really didn't feel right until Tarzan was [Warning, Spoilers ahead] back at the cabin with Jane. There was some nice resolution with the character of Clayton, but I thought it was a huge mistake to end with Tarzan, Jane and the gang heading back to civilation. Tarzan is only cool in the jungle. It doesn't work otherwise. I'm going to hang in there, because I loved the jungle sections of this book. I just hope they get back to basics soon.

The beginning was slow, but the last six or seven chapters were a rush! Really picked up and got exciting!
