This is my third twisted tale book and I really do enjoy this series.

This book is pretty much official fanfiction, and I was living for it. It's pretty fun and I appreciate how Disney got Elizabeth Lim to write their Mulan fanfiction AU twisted tale, she did a great job preserving the cultural elements that the story deserved and makes Mulan, well, Mulan.

I'm a little disappointed because I expected this book to delve a little bit deeper into the characters and explore Mulan and Shan's relationship more. (The movie is after all, only 90mins and how dare Disney get me so attached to two fictional characters that I barely know then butcher their sequel?)
Instead Reflection had a heavy emphasis on adventure and new trials (basically plot) which is cool, just not what I was expecting or looking for. This might also be me projecting my fanfiction experience onto this book, in which case I apologise.

What happens in the afterlife has been a mystery and a fascination of humankind from the beginning of complex thought. From Dante’s inferno onward, many people have theorized in a fictional setting what may be the goings-on in the underworld or heaven or hell or reincarnation. Reflection gives us a window into some of the beliefs of the Chinese and the afterlife that Lim has imagined.

Its beautiful, poetic, and at times emotionally stirring. The book is well written and the characters are just as we know them from the classic Disney film. The one problem is this book has a slow start where a scene of Mulan is retold, but merely in a novelization format with no twists. However once you get past the first 50 pages or so, you’ll be delighted to read about Mulan’s adventures in the underworld.
