I’ve just found out from other reviews that this is the first in a trilogy. Nowhere is that apparent in the book until you reach the glaring cliffhanger of an ending. Big no-no for me.

*Pros*: fast and tense plot that kept me gripped. I read the book in one sitting. Adequate writing, strongest on the dialogue. I liked the romantic banter, and I really appreciated the dynamic of Mrs F and her kids. Kell had a complicated past that becomes central to the plot. She’s also a strong female character, though somewhat weakened by her cliche “I can’t trust anyone” attitude.

*Cons*: Not a fan of the insta-love or abrupt ending that leaves a lot unexplained. Copious and detailed mentions of clothes and how hot Kell is - typical for romance novels but seemed out of place in the suspenseful plot. Side characters are not well developed and there’s a lot of names to keep track of (even for minor people). Luke’s backstory was glossed over and seemed forced, so he could have a tragic past. His character was a little too “the perfect guy” for me- his many talents,  endless free time, and light-speed vacillations between (deserved) anger at Kell’s lies and loving forgiveness.

Also why so much hate on defense lawyers?? They act like Kell’s high powered attorney life is  for money-grubbing, morally bankrupt scum. But then
she quits in a crisis of conscience (“I have to do better” blabla), but at the end of the book returns to the same firm? Makes no sense.

No real tension and the pacing is too slow.

In order to help her stand in mother, Kell Jameson returns to the town she fled sixteen years ago. Before she even gets to the orphanage, she is stopped by Sheriff Luke Calder, a Chicago cop who fled to Hallden. Sparks fly at their first encounter--outwardly angry sparks, inwardly hottt. Flames remain between them throughout, even during the short boy-loses-girl phase. Kell is a complex character. Luke is a little too perfect, despite his Troubled Past.

Reckless is compelling and has lots of great characters. I didn't mind the non-ending ending, but other readers might.
