Peace Like a River is a meditative coming of age story set in western Minnesota and the Badlands of North Dakota in the 1960s. Told from the perspective of 11-year-old Reuben, the story addresses themes of love, family, and faith as well as forgiveness and the quest for justice. Overall, a bit longish for me but I loved the characters, and the writing was gorgeous.
This would be perfect for readers who loved News of the World, Ordinary Grace or A Prayer for Owen Meany.

I'm wondering if I started this in high school and never finished. The character Swede was incredibly familiar to me, but the plot was brand new. Are there any other books featuring precocious little girls that write cowboy poetry?
The characters and situations in the book are compelling. The writing style was good. idk, it was fine and made me think but it wasn't anything special.

The very first chapter of this book caught my heart; when I reached the second chapter I turned back to the first chapter and read it again, just for the beauty of it. (Swede has a moment with a goose that is so well captured, I can't even put words to it.)
The second to last chapter of the book is out of swing with every other chapter in Peace Like a River, and it bothered me.
From the event the night that Davy goes to jail onwards, I had no idea how the book would end or how any closure could occur. It happens, but not in a way that I would ever expect.
