I’ve always been a fat person, but I’ve never truly contended with the existence of people who were fatter than me. I’ve experienced some of the things that Aubrey mentioned in this book, like issues with accessing medical care. But I’ve never been kicked off a plane. I’m able to find my size in most stores. Well, at least now I am. 15 years ago, probably not. And reading this book, I registered everything that Aubrey was saying as correct and awful, because it is, but I also have to acknowledge that I am a more privileged fat person because I’m the ‘right kind of fat’. I also love that Aubrey calls out thin people, but she doesn’t call them out for being thin, she calls them out for their anti-fat bias.

this book was phenomenal! my main complaint, as someone who read it from beginning to end, is that there were several chapters that had 2-3 pages functionally repeating something said in a previous chapter. however, because this book was explicitly written with the intention of people reading it as separate entries, it didnt bother me that much. just something to note! aubrey did a fantastic job, as per usual, and even as someone who is fairly well versed in body liberation i still learned a ton that i was not previously aware of.

this is my coming out as a maintenance phase girlie

while this touches on a number of things already discussed by aubrey and michael in various episodes of their podcast, i think it does a great job as the maintenance phase: extended mythbusters edition and i appreciate the importance it calls to intersectionality and inclusion of further reading suggestions like fearing the black body. definitely recommend for those actively doing the work to unlearn their anti-fat bias and the myths we have been told about diet culture!!!!

Aubrey Gordon is SO GOOD and this should be required reading for anyone looking for data and arguments to use against anti-fatness.

This book is great for people new to the conversation of fat liberation, body neutrality, and the myths of fatness. If you want to know how to be a better ally to your fat loved ones, this is a great place to start.
