Dirk Pitt delivers what it promises: melodramatic action heroics with ridiculous villains and incredible plots to save the world. Still, that's something you could get from any Dirk Pitt book; a bit of graphic transphobia by the protagonists in Shockwave makes me recommend you pick up a different one.

A villain is a transphobic caricature; only implied until a paragraph near the end which goes into "the end of the crying game" territory. This is not integral to the plot and can be read around but is a nasty, graphic shock for the unsuspecting and makes it difficult to relate to the main characters.peregrineace's review against another edition

My favorite Clive Cussler book. This one is at the top of his game... action, subterfuge, remote locations, a haunting past, and just-in-the-nick-of-time plotting... who could ask for more?

Reading this book more than two decades after it's written, one sees some issues with it. It's very much a macho, man saves helpless woman kind of novel. The main female character is supposed to be this independent woman who defied her family. She's supposedly strong enough to make it on her own. However, through the novel she constantly needed Dirk Pitt to rescue her. I understand that he is the hero, but it did get annoying. There are quite a few sexist, some homophobic remarks scattered throughout that irked me too. The romance is not all that believable, in my opinion. I did not really care for it. The action is what one would expect from a Clive Cussler book, a bit over-the-top. I usually enjoy his novels, but this one: not that much.

Pitt and Giordino investigate an underwater sonic pulse that is so powerful that it destroys all life within its range. I love these adventure that always involve some sort of water element.
