The last 10 mins saved this from being a 1 star. This definitely leaned more toward dark romance to me than I prefer. There is lots of threatened (in detail) SA, the MMC is morally black as they come, and the FMC was over sexualized by everything she came into contact with and is nothing to write home about personality wise.

The author did not endear me to any of the characters - I couldn’t care less if any of them died or lived.

The “romance” between the FMC and MMC was off putting to me. I don’t prefer the, “he’s a monster but different with me” trope.

The only thread that kept me from DNFing was wanting to know her connection to the fae realms and unanswered questions from her childhood and animal fondness. This was answered in the last 10 mins of the book…the very last 10 mins! I’m annoyed because those last 10 mins may make me read book 2. I will put it off for a while though as the rest of the book was not my jam. At least it’s a shorter listen.

The narrators are the real hero’s here as they did make it bearable. Kudos to them!

Wow, this was SO bad. The writing was awful. It felt like the plot was like the Walmart version of ACOTAR. The characters were not interesting. The FMC is an idiot. Who goes into the woods wearing a short black dress and heels? And she’s supposed to be an extremely intelligent scientist? This was the worst book of 2025 for me so far. Save yourself some time and don’t read this one.
