I love how much this series has improved. The stakes (pun not intended) are raised in this installment, and Rose has developed so much as a character. This is also the best friendship story of the series thus far, because we really see how much Rose will do for Lissa and how difficult it is.
dark sad tense

worst yet. really bad.

Finally, I finished this book yesterday.

I thought the start was rather slow, but it eventually developed and got more interesting.
By the end of this book, I was sobbing too. It seems I have cried in every book of this series but the first one. The pain from the last got carried off to this book too.
It's like there was some built-up unspoken pain and heartbreak, and the feelings were overwhelming when Rose and Dimitri were fighting. It was an odd mixture to see two people who loved each other so much, run a wild chase and die for the sake of the other. One: Kill him because she wanted to save him. Two: Chase her because he believed awakening her would be better for her.

Their interactions was a bizarre mix of emotions:
Of fear, love, anger-- Dimitri 'wanted' her, but Rose wanted to kill him, and I found it really ironic. They once loved each other, turned their back to the greatest opportunities that lay ahead of them only to end it in a way you wouldn't have expectd.
It was like they were both fighting a battle, a great battle, in which 'success' to them had different meanings.

I climbed up onto the railing of the bridge, swinging one leg over. I knew
what had to happen now. He froze.
“What are you doing?
”I told you. I’ll die before I become Strigoi. I won’t be like you or the others.
I don’t want that. You didn’t want that, once upon a time.”

And just like that, my heart broke. So much pain, so much waiting, so much reminiscing. Dimitri has changed, and knowing what he used to be like, it was so much harder for Rose to move on.

“We need to be together.”
“Why?” I asked softly. The word was carried away on the wind, but he heard.
“Because I want you."
I gave him a sad smile, wondering if we’d meet again in the land of the dead.
“Wrong answer,” I told him.
I let go.

Rose understood how much Dimitri meant to her, but she also understood what she meant to him now. He wanted her like a possession, and she would not become Strigoi for that Dimitri that wanted her. Her Dimitri would not have wanted that.

...
I looked him in the eye. “I will always love you."
Then I plunged the stake into his chest.
...
His eyes
stared at me, stunned, and his lips parted, almost into a smile, albeit
A grisly and pained one.
“That’s what I was supposed to say. . . .” he gasped out.

That scene has sent my heart aching, feeling terrible for Rose. For Dimitri. I couldn't explain how I felt. Possibly a bit of relief. A feeling of what could have happened, and... that Dimitri understood. He loved her. Or realized he should have said it, at least.

It was sad to see Rose go back to St. Vladimir at the same time, but it brought a feeling of relief. Although I didn't like how they kept saying Rose should come back to her bondmate- a bit irritating to be dictated- It was great to see Rose come back. Rose was thinking if her life could ever be the same again, and personally, I think a month and a bit was too short, because so much has happened since she has left.

Ever since they said Lissa could heal the darkness out of Rose, I thought there was a possibility Dimitri could be healed, too. It looks like it's entirely possible in the next book, or books. ;-]

I love how Richelle Mead has twisted the plot into opening an adventurous path for the next book. I can't wait to read Spirit Bound. I wouldn't say Blood Promise has the ultimate cliffhanger. It does, however, give a burning interest to read the next book.

This is now, officially the book with the most status updates I have.

I found Blood Promise a compelling read, one that can't help but make you think of what you value the most, how you should treasure things, and the pain of sacrifice and true love. True love is for worth fighting for, and Rose has done it up to the end-

even if the process nearly killed her.

DID NOT FINISH: 20%

I’ve decided to be mature, which means I’ve unhauled all my books in this series and that currently I’m no longer going to continue. I may go back and read them again but for now I’ve decided there is no point keeping them and continuing to read them if I know I’m not going to enjoy them :,)

Well the story progressed, but again driven by bad choices that get acknowledged at the end at stupid. Rose just doesn't seem to learn.

Fine book but worth a skim read. Nothing fancy about it.

Lots of action and lots of character growth.
