3'5⭐

Finally catching up with my 2023 reads so far....this was where I stopped with Vampire Academy reread for now. This was fun but not nearly to the same extent as the others. I find Rose/Dimitri interesting (and extremely problematic) as a secondary plot but turning it into the main plot really didn't work for me. Also so many things about the Strigoi make no sense. I do want to keep rereading but yeah this was not as good.
Read this book pretty fast because I couldn't put it down. It took me through the heart break , the exciting feelings , the action packed moments and everything else that came with it with a matter of 500 so pages ! I loved every chapter , every scene . With Meads easy to read writing and enticing all consuming stories ( Amazing Series ) I can't wait to read more and more !

I am once again completely and utterly unwell. Blood Promise emotionally wrecked me in a quieter, more insidious way than Shadow Kiss--and now I'm bracing myself because I know Mead is going to drag this particular brand of pain out for two more books.
This one definitely takes a slower pace than the first three. Rose's journey through Russia was emotionally heavy and full of grief, and while I get that, there were moments where she really dragged her feed. Her internal processing made sense, but I still found myself yelling at her to get on with it already. And those long stretches inside Lissa's head? I now understand why they were there, but at the time...I was annoyed. They broke the momentum in a book that already felt emotionally thick.
That said, Rose is still an incredible protagonist. Her strength, her resolve, and the depth of her heartbreak kept me locked in, even through the slower bits. The scene at Dimitri's funeral had me in RUINS.
As for Dimitri...I hated him in this book. Which I think was the point. His Strigoi version felt wrong and uncomfortable and icky in a way that was really effective. But still. Ew.
Some bright spots: Abe, Olena, and Dimitri's grandmother were fantastic additions to the worldbuilding. Those side characters really grounded the Russia storyline.
This book was less about action and more about emotional endurance. It's eerie, sad, and full of loss, but it's not hopeless. It sets the stage for something big, and I'm clinging to the idea that Rose is going to rise from this darkness stronger than ever.
Highly recommend, but emotionally prepare yourself. Maybe buy some tissues.

I'm falling in love with this series!
I loved the story in Blood Promise, all of the twists that came towards the end of the book was crazy, and I didn't see it coming - especially the Avery part. I loved how we got to know so much more, about Dimitri and his family, and how Rose coped being on her own. Very excited to read the next book, I bet it's full of action, haha!
