This book has so much going for it. Its not perfect but I enjoyed it very much. Its actually unexpectedly sweet while still being very alpha, contentious and freakin funny. I think it helped that it had been a while since i had read book 1. I was familiar with the characters but didn’t remember that (like so many authors tipical of sequels) JTG repeats some behaviors and scenarios.

Most of the dialogue is amazing well done, incredibly funny up and has some really great life lessons and quotable moments. Our heroine’s best friends are a hoot, killian is intense, funny, wonderful, multi dimensional and most every other character has some color added, including an insignificant guy who kidnaps her. The conversation goes like this after he inflicted some light torture and he’s speaking to her from above the dungeon she’s imprisoned in: “you were brave— you didn’t whine, etc…” “Thank you,” she replies, “i like how you scream,” he responds. uh oh. You get a very clear picture of him with very little effort from JTG.

Our heroine is also drawn beautifully also but i think her strength comes from her reactions with other characters. If fact, her annoying behavior occurs when she thinks too much. That, and her tendancy toward extreme over analysis. Oh, that she behaves like she's not living on an assistant-to-a-news reporter’s salary.

The plot works but it has some weak spots. How many times do I have to listen to another author turn “i forgot the condom” into a huge plot motivator when the morning after pill exists? it’s not like they were on a deserted island! I swear only once has an author handled it like an adult in the free world.

Most of the dialogue in the book is fabulous up to about 65% and then it briefly gets a little stupid and repetitive, ie the pregnancy fear, and her best friends turn into bitchy snarks every time they open their mouths and you wonder how they managed to live together for so long. But that's not that much and all the character development is worth it, even her short term stupidity in order to lengthen the story.

Addendum— I just read the dangerous beauty series where we meet killian and he is an incredible character in that book so I’m going to reread this with all that backstory fresh.

Killian, this man, this man is such a simp. He is obsessed, enamored, starved, and absolutely in love with our MC. This literally had my favorite trope, “you’re gorgeous when you’re angry.” (Both books in the duet have this vibe and it is PERFECTION.) This man was just every form of delicious.

Also our MC, Juliet, is so stubborn, fiesty, independent, strong, and so badass. Ugh. I loved her. She had such a fire and Killian had NO interest in putting it out. No. No. No. He wanted to ignite that fire UP!

I will say, at times, Juliet PISSED ME OFF. Especially when she wouldn’t just believe Killian’s feelings but girl got a trouble passed - who could blame her?

One qualm with the love story was that it felt a bit too ‘insta-love” on Killian’s end. Also there was an intense moment that I thought was going to turn into a pregnancy trope and tbh, I was considering bailing but I’m thrilled I pushed through. Overall, I loved their relationship and this book so much!

We come across Killian in Dangerous Beauty, which I haven’t read, so I’m excited to dive into that soon.

This book was everything because of one character...Killian Black. You have to read [b:Beautifully Cruel|48662527|Beautifully Cruel (Beautifully Cruel, #1)|J.T. Killian not only had all the usual alpha tendencies, but he had a great sense of humor. I loved the banter between him and the female MC Juliet. Juliet on the other hand...annoying is the word that comes to mind. The back and forth - do I like him? No I don't. Yes I do. He is like my father. No he isn't. Blah blah blah.

It was a fun and entertaining book and I really hope Diego and Declan get their own books.

ETA: They do get their books in the Queens & Monsters series.

4 stars

This is a great contemporary mafia romance. The main male character is the bad guy with buckets of money and the lead female is a poor waitress.

Although there is a crime element, this is not a dark romance. There are themes of stalking, love at first sight and forced proximity, but it is handled very lightly.

I read this book very quickly and really enjoyed it, but it is not gonna light the world on fire.
