I enjoyed this one. Bit of a different one from the author since the main characters already had a past before where the novel had started.
IF YOU THINK I'M READING THIS WHOLE SERIES BET YOUR ASS
This was the second book in the series, and I enjoyed it a little more than the first!
Matt Cannon is a boy wonder, or at least he used to be. He's always done things faster than his peers. He graduated high school at 16, college at 19, and started working for one of the best firms on Wall Street at 22. Now, he's 28, and he's basically got everything he ever wanted. But, at a bachelor party in Las Vegas, he gets photographed in a compromising position, and his bosses and clients get nervous about how he's living his life. He thinks it's a bunch of garbage, but he needs help to fix it, fast. He needs a fake girlfriend to show he's settled down. Who better to pretend to be his girlfriend than the one woman who can't stand him, and will have zero chance of actually falling for him, Sabrina Cross.
Sabrina is a PR genius and general "fixer". She grew up in Philly with Ian, the hero from book 1, and they are still best friends. So, she's known Matt for years, but they have a very interesting history. They antagonize each other constantly, and they get under each other's skin. They are also wildly attracted to each other, which doesn't help matters. But, when Matt asks for her help, she agrees. Why? She's not quite sure yet, but she hopes she'll figure it out before things get too out of hand.
Matt and Sabrina had chemistry off the charts, but they were fighting it constantly, for a variety of reasons, many of which were valid. Some though, I found to be a bit of a cop out, and that bothered me. Neither main character seemed to be overly self aware, and that led to all sorts of issues, that could have easily been avoided otherwise, in my opinion. This was a scenario where I wished the characters had been more honest with THEMSELVES, much less with each other. But, I did enjoy their obviously strong connection, and I liked how they were with each other, and how different it was from how they were with everyone else. It was important for them to realize that difference, and what it meant, and I was relieved when some of that started breaking through.
Both Matt and Sabrina had difficult childhoods, in wildly different ways, but that manifested itself in a similar commitment avoidance issues, and a general lack of want of, or success in, romantic relationships. They both had to come to terms with their myriad issues before they had a chance together, and I wasn't 100% sure they could do it, which kept me on my toes a bit.
I enjoyed seeing all the same side characters again here, as in book 1. I'm of course intrigued by the third best friend at the firm, Kennedy, and the boys' shared assistant, Kate. There is clearly some seemingly unrequited attraction on Kate's side, and I'm curious to finally see things from their POVs.

“because that’s what matt cannon does. he turns my otherwise in-control life upside down, every damn chance he gets.”
I LOVE THEM SO MUCH !!
sabrina cross is my BEST GIRL and matt cannon might be the one blond man i’d risk my life for.
also this book includes the tropes fake dating, “enemies”-with-benefits, AND “enemies”-to lovers so whats not to like about it ??

I requested this book off a whim of thinking that this kind of romance novel might be something that I'd enjoy. I didn't go into this with any expectations so there couldn't have been anything to disappoint me with.
I didn't dislike this novel nor did I like it. It was as if I was reading it to read it. I didn't feel any particular emotion towards this book. I think it might have had to do with the writing because it was way too informal for me. I understand why the author chose to do the different character perspectives but it was too much.
This wasn't as I was anticipating, I couldn't connect with any of the characters because they're not in the same social class as me and their age. I have nothing against people on Wall Street, it's more of that I cannot connect with older adults who have a successful job and having a lot of money. I think if they had been more realistic as in, the constant going out, shopping and all that, instead they would stay inside on a Friday night or had some kind of response to the stress that they were going through would have made it more interesting. If the author hadn't made them live basically in a perfect world, currently, then maybe things would have happened better.
The characters themselves were okay, they seemed like typical human beings, I didn't really find one more interesting than the other. Usually, for me, I find characters more interesting and realistic during first-person perspectives but this time around, I didn't unfortunately.
Overall, this was an okay novel. I think that if you have read this and enjoyed it, I'm happy. If you like cheesy, guilty pleasure reads, this book may be for you, even though it wasn't for me.

This is why I love enemies to lovers!! GOD THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD!!
The frenemies to lovers/enemies with benefits (I laughed when I first read them saying that because it's so true) + fake dating plot was excellent and I absolutelly loved both Sabrina and Matt.
Sabrina Cross was as sassy and strong as you can get. I loved everything about her, especially the fact that she was a hell of a soldier.
Matthew Cannon was totally charming with his easygoing yet cocky personality. Since the first book I felt like I was going to love him; I'm glad I wasn't disappointed.
Matt and Sabrina's story mesmerized me because they complete each other so well, their happy ending was the only one possible (or acceptable).
I don't have a single complaint about this book, I swear. I read it so fast because I simply couldn't let go of their banter or the way that they cared for each other, even when they also wanted strangle each other.
Lauren Layne did an amazing job here and I'm at a loss of words. I'm just gonna say that you HAVE to read this book!!
P.S.: Lovely seeing Jared Lanham again! Hope we can get his book soon, he seems like a character who will give us a good story.

Lauren Layne's books are always easily good reads. This was quite entertaining and I really like how badass Sabrina is. I can't wait to read Kate and Kennedy's story.
