Why is this a classic? It was not good at all. If you want to read a mouse story, read the Tumtum and Nutmeg books instead.

Reread to the millionth degree! My mother gave me the "trilogy" for my 8th birthday and I fell in love with all three books pretty much instantly. I decided in November to get myself a set of them again [thank you, ebay!:] because my original sent was lost. These books are the literary equivalent to comfort food to me, and I'm SO fucking glad to have them in my possession again...

Normally, I'm a big fan of E.B. White, but this book really didn't float my boat. It was just so strange, from the moment of a mouse being born to human parents all the way to the end when he drove away into the sunset. Eh? I just didn't get it. Don't think my students would be a big fan of it either. It's just not accessible for a normally raised modern young person. What can I say?

I received this book for Christmas in 1962 when I was nine years old. I just re-read it because we took our grandchildren to see the 1999 movie in the theater. This is one of those rare times I have to say the movie is better than the book. The book contains a lot of anecdotes strung together, whereas the movie has a plot and a theme. In the book Mrs. Little actually gives birth to a mouse. In the movie Stuart is adopted - just a little bit more believable!

Stuart as a character is so sweet and whimsical and I think if the story was fleshed out more, it would be an absolute charmer of a book. However, the entire story was so rushed without any complete arc which was very frustrating.

Having enjoyed reading some of E.B. White's essays, I thought I should actually read his children's novels for myself and not just rely on the movie versions. Well, Stuart Little, the book, was a profound disappointment and theories abound as to what happened to White while he was writing this book. But let's just say, that for me, the movie version outshines whatever White was trying to do with the book. Oh well, I still love his essays and will go finish Charlotte's Web and end with The Trumpet of the Swan, but for me, Stuart Little was a let down.

Read as a class

I never thought I'd say this, but Stuart Little is a sulky, immature jerk. I don't think I've ever read a children's book where the main character gets progressively more unlikable and learns absolutely nothing throughout the entire story.

It’s a childhood classic! I love Stuart honestly, and read it with my family as a family bookclub pick. It was funny to read as a group and get everyone’s reactions and stuff. Definitely made it ten times better. But the book itself is a stand out on it’s own.
