It just felt unfinished. Was surprised when I reached the end of the book.

Beautifully read.
This book has its moments but ends in a very odd manner. My 7 year old struggled to understand much of what happened in this book.

For some reason I thought I'd read this years and years ago in a children's literature class, but when I started listening to it in the car with my son, I realized I had not ever read it before.

We loved some of the descriptions - the little clothes and accessories are kind of fun - and I loved the tension between Stuart and the family cat. However, the ending was so abrupt and so unsatisfactory. I had to search around to see if there was sequel so I could know what happened to Margalo.

There were a few other things that just didn't fit well with the story - Stuart substitute teaching and his "date" with Harriet - I would stick with the Ralph S. Mouse series by Beverly Cleary any day over this one.

I didn't remember this one as well from when I was a kid. I forgot that the story just sort of ends. My daughter wanted to know what happened next. But she enjoyed it.

I love the stories of Stuart running around New York and his adventures! But the ending is so random and makes no sense! The date with the tiny girl... what was the point? Going off to “find” Margalo? That was a great story arc that was just abandoned! The writing style and descriptions/imagery was great but the story line wasn’t the best.

I loved, loved, loved this book as a child. I still think of it. Last year I was in Paris at a circular pond with sailboat and I thought of Stuart, one of my favourite chapters in a book ever.

Way odder than I would have expected. Not the premise itself, but the fact that the action is mostly realistic save for random bursts of fantasy, as well as a weird, somewhat aimless third act and ending

I have to say I wasn't overly impressed with this one. I never read it as a child, so there was no nostalgia for me while reading it. My 6 year old enjoyed it though; we read it through together once, and she is now reading through it on her own for the second time.

The ending was very open ended and I expected there to be a sequel. But it does give the reader a chance to make up their own ending, or continue Stuarts adventures on their own.

I will say I am happy to have found this book, as my daughter is a very advanced reader for her age, and I felt the content of this book to be appropriate for her.

Started reading this yesterday and got a little more than half way through. After reading another chapter today I couldn't bear to finish it. I think it's the layout of the plot that didn't appeal - I prefer longer narratives rather than a series of short stories.

I don't think I ever read this as a kid but it's an odd one. Stuart is weirdly adult and aims for a level of sophistication that one wouldn't expect .
I gives this is more a set of stories about Stuart's adventures but there's a kind of disconnect between the chapters. I picked up this at a yard sale for 50 cents. I figure I got my money's worth.
Odd....
