I went into this book picturing the cute mouse and family from the movie. As I read through each short story about Stuart I was entertained, but felt as though something was missing. Then, we finished the book and I was left feeling as though I had been tricked into reading an incomplete book. Almost as if it were a rough outline that would later be finished and polished.

"Following a broken repair line north, I have come upon some wonderful places," continued the repairman. "Swamps where cedars grow and turtles wait on logs but not for anything in particular; fields bordered by crooked fences broken by years of standing still; orchards so old they have forgotten where the farmhouse is. In the north I have eaten my lunch in pastures rank with ferns and junipers, all under fair skies with a wind blowing. My business has taken me into spruce woods on winter nights where the snow lay deep and soft, a perfect place for a carnival of rabbits. I have sat at peace on the freight platforms of railroad junctions in the north, in the warm hours and with the warm smells. I know fresh lakes in the north, undisturbed except by fish and hawk and, of course, by the Telephone Company, which has to follow its nose. I know all these places well. They are a long way from here - don't forget that. And a person who is looking for something doesn't travel very fast."

great book - one of my childhood favorites. i enjoyed reading it again with my kids.

One of our favorite audiobooks so far. Well read and fun!

Eeek, I think I liked the movie more. Though I saw it before I read this book, so maybe I'm biased. Stuart is a mouse in the family and is helpful to the Little family, but sometimes gets forgotten, like in the fridge! The story just ends with Stuart driving off to look for the bird that stayed with them for a bit.

Another week. Another kids book at lunch.

Read it out loud to my four year old, it was fine but neither of us were that interested in it. The cutest part was Margalo but everything else was a bit of a bore. We tried this after finishing the first four magic treehouse and chronically of Narnia. After the magic and intrigue of those stories, a relatively boring story with a mundane plot just didn’t do it for us.
Not bad, but not engaging enough for a four year old and I didn’t need to read it again either.
