I don't know how many times I've read this book, but reading it again for the Childhood Favourites Reading Challenge was a joy. Even though I knew what was going to happen, I still laughed when I read about Stuart inside the piano, and I felt sad when his friend Margalo the bird left home.

Read for my little book 'club' of two.
I loved the story's open-ended conclusion. If this book had been written by an unknown author of today, would the publisher have asked for a different ending?
Just seeing the [author:Garth Williams|30916] illustrations brings back memories of the ones of his I love the most: those of The Little House on the Prairie series.

A woman gives birth to a mouse and no one is concerned. The mouse then goes on adventures, which include falling in love with a little bird, steering a tiny boat, and taking a Thumbalina esque girl on a date that goes horribly wrong. He then rides off into the sunset, which feels a little incomplete. Maybe he goes on to find other tiny mice-like humans?

The book was magical, but I found the ending abrupt and unsatisfying.
So . . . at first I thought this was sweet and endearing. However, it seemed to get even more odd as the story progressed. The invisible car and then the substitute teaching chapter? It just didn't seem to fit. And then I was disappointed by how Stuart handled the birch bark canoe disappointment. And the ending was not very fulfilling. So . . yeah, not my favorite . . .

Update: huh. I was having so much fun, and then things took an odd turn after the schoolhouse. Disappointed to find Stuart behaving like kind of a jackass in the last two chapters.
*****
Reading because the second chapter of Books for Living warned of spoilers for Stuart Little. And since I can't bring myself to skip a chapter, and I hate spoilers... I'm pausing to read Stuart Little.
If this keeps up, it might take me a while to finish Books for Living.
Conveniently, this also suits #7 of the 2017 Read Harder Challenge: Read a book published between 1900 and 1950.
