I have been re-reading or reading various children's classic chapter books with my daughter and have had great success with, for example, Winnie-the-Pooh and Charlotte's Web. Stuart Little will not join the ranks among children's classics that I find engaging and have enjoyed re-reading.
There are some amusing parts in this book, sure, but overall it just kind of wanders around until it reaches its abrupt, wholly unsatisfying "conclusion"-- a word I put in air quotes because it just kind of ends mostly because it feels like E.B. White was tired of writing and just stopped.
This book is eighty years old, but SPOILER ALERT just in case-- when I read the last page, my daughter cried out, "But I want to see him find Margalo." Oh, you mean, the driving premise of the entire second half of the book? You wanted to see that thread resolved in some way--ANY WAY--rather than just abandoned in favor of some wandering storyline about Stuart kind of being an asshole to schoolchildren, trying to date a girl whom he knew nothing about other than the fact that she was, inexplicably, mouse-sized, but then losing her interest when he was pouty and rude when his plans didn't go off perfectly, with an ending that felt like an insult to children-- "eh, kids don't deserve anything that is good or makes sense, fuck them" E.B. White said, removing the final page from his typewriter and sending it off to his editor with a note that read, "Whatever." Yeah, I would have liked that too, kid.
Stuart Little is a dud. Pass.

The most open-ended, philosophical, character-driven children's book I recall reading. When I reached the ending, I closed the cover and said aloud, "What an odd book." Thinking about it a bit more, it strikes me that this is a book not about a series of adventures, but about adventure itself, and the spirit that lands you there.
3.5 stars
My 5 and 4 year olds (boy and girl) enjoyed this very much, though perhaps not as much as Charlotte's Web. We were not ready for it to end!
It's episodic and the ending is open-ended, both aspects that make it pretty different from Charlotte's Web. Nevertheless, we overall enjoyed it!

THIS WAS SO Beautiful!!! Such a lighthearted and warm story about a mouse and his adventures. I remember watching the movies as a child and loving them and it was time i read the book. I am glad i did because a rewatch of those movies are happening soon!! Everytime I was reading this book I was so in it !! It was that good!
Why am I so bothered by his temper tantrum and the way it ended?
